so much of the horror genre is informed by the metaphor of queer/transness as monstrousness. especially emphasizing the amount of horror that depends on the audience's repulsion at seeing a human body changing into a new, other body. I'm sorry but I can't get over how much of a loser Ryland Grace is. I love him but he's so stupid. He writes the most controversial paper in the history of his field and after he's laughed out of academia he's like actually I wanted to leave anyway. And then when the worst paper in the history of science somehow gets him access to actual real life aliens it takes him like a week to have the idea to kill one of them to see what happens. And then when the sample is distributed and he only has three left he fucking loses them and has to play the worlds highest stakes game of I Spy. He gets kidnapped by Earth's new dictator during a top secret mission during which she commits ten thousand crimes and thinks that she's just keeping him around for his winning personality. Tries to save his friend by using a leaf blower to separate him from his internal organs. Guy of all time
