Hold on. Aaron doesn't seem to understand what Andrew means about the "importance of hiding scars" but he notices that Betsy does. He realizes that they would go wildly off track if he "followed it to whatever ugly truth Andrew was hiding".

Because that adds this whole other layer to their relationship. Andrew keeps his guard up around Aaron, and never lets Aaron see that he could ever be "weak". Never gives Aaron the chance to comfort him or fuss over him like a concerned brother. If Aaron never knew, that means Nicky doesn't know either. So Andrew has really been lone-wolfing it this entire time. And the facade he puts on to deter others from getting close is also being used to deter his own family.

And people have been saying "how could Andrew's family treat him like that!" They've been treating him like that because he's been encouraging it so that he'd never have to show them his vulnerabilities.
