So Ronan Lynch really just texts tamquam to his bf, gives said bf (who is going to be on a motorcycle for the next 8 hour, who also has a quiz the next day, who also is probably sleep deprived) like 12 hours to alter idem back, yeets his phone away when he doesnt get a timely response, joins a cult, decides that fuck texting, he’s never texting again, doesn’t call his bf for weeks, blocks his bf from reaching him in dreamspace, finally decides it’s time to talk, bf says ONE thing he doesn’t like and he’s like nope I’m out, hangs up on bf and hurls his phone out of a moving vehicle as hard as he can.

Damn, what a mess.

(All jokes aside, I felt really bad for him the whole book. He’s so alone and I just want him to be happy again.)

Ronan's come comeuppance was equally satisfying. He can finally see everything falling apart (and the duchy seceded to Tilendria! YES!). Of course he's placing the blame elsewhere, not a lick of self awareness. Nate stole his wife? The wife he ignored and tried to humiliate and sneered at? Ass. Although that 'they even stole my mother' kind of hit me, not gonna lie. That has to hurt. To have everyone so thoroughly turn their back on him. And yet, still no introspection. I'm glad he's suffering.

Ronan still lacking self awareness and blaming others is exactly why everyone else turned their backs on him. Even the Queen has limits, and him working with the king and drugging Lenora crossed a line for her.

Another line that only hit me on the reread. 

As Adam and Blue have this intimate, post-dream-tree moment, Ronan is "staring at them, raw". Ronan explains later, in the Raven King, that the visions in the tree are:

"Nightmares", "Worst-case scenarios. Whatever mindfuckery it thought would be most likely to mess you up the next day." 

So maybe that highlighted line isn't only a reference to Ronan understanding the tree because he dreamt it. Maybe his understanding, his rawness, is because he's actually staring at a real world version of his worst-case-scenario-nightmare-mindfuckery: Adam with someone else, Adam with a female someone else, Adam being 100% unavailable to him. 

Maybe he sees the intimacy of that moment between Blue and Adam and realises it’s an intimacy he wants for himself but thinks he can never have.

Maybe it dredges up his feelings of unloveability and abandonment.

Maybe, without even stepping into the tree, he's having to face the truth of his sexuality and the impossibility of ever sharing it with someone he has feelings for, no matter how many dollies they drag each other around on. 

Maybe he doesn't quite realise all this right now, but maybe it's why he's so raw.

how many times has ronan lost his keys to monmouth and just decided breaking in is way easier than looking for them, only to discover *after* breaking the door down that the keys were in fact in his pocket the whole time.
