chapters 22-27 (and epilogue) of sunrise on the reaping; a review with spoilers:
Please excuse any typos, I have literal tear stains on my glasses
"Come on, Sis. I need this for my next poster"
A more literal run-in with the Gamemakers??
The fact that Maysilee is a locket girl (like I am)
Maysilee knowing Nothing You Can Take From Me
Maysilee and Haymitch saying goodbye
Maysilee being attacked by something designed to remind her about her caged upbringing- ironic that it's birds, then
Maysilee and Haymitch saying goodbye
Haymitch stacking necklaces like Maysilee did; then honouring her as a sister. "A sister is someone you can fight with and fight for. Tooth and nail"
Haymitch receiving strawberry ice cream and coffee to mourn
"It's okay to cry around Mags"
Haymitch organising his plans moving forward based on what Maysilee would have wanted him to do, missing her
Haymitch getting some sparks flying
Maysilee's medallion being the object that allows Haymitch to provide light for himself and Wellie; Maysilee indirectly giving them hope
Wellie, Haymitch, and Silka being huddled up "the three of us," like the three dead fox mutts from before
Haymitch rebelling against the Capitol through acts of genuine kindness, dropping the chocolate to Silka- this kindness mirroring Peeta
Haymitch quoting Maysilee's "matchy-matchy"
"These Games will have no victor," being Haymitch's ideal outcome, and later being the same way in which Katniss and Peeta saved each other
"Sparks flying"
"My dove in the coal mine, who warned me of danger," the rabbits reminding Haymitch of Lenore Dove, being referred to as mining canaries- swallowed up by a snake before him; warning him in the arena, but not warning him like canaries of Lenore Dove's fate with Snow
Orange
Snow using footage of Lucy Gray to torture Haymitch about Lenore Dove
"It was someone she cared for, from the look of it," in reference to Lucy Gray looking towards a concealed Snow
"My nails have turned to claws, my hair to fur," yeah Haymitch dog metaphor is alive and well
Despite being traumatised, basically delirious, and depressed, Haymitch wants to credit Effie for dressing him in public<3
Effie standing by Haymitch<3
Effie knowing that Haymitch wouldn't hurt her, knowing he's a good person. She repeats that the Games are for the greater good as though having to convince herself that it's true, or concealing her outright support of Haymitch, which may be seen as suspicious
Lenore Dove, Ma, and Sid being omitted from the reaping footage, so that it'd be easier for the audience to forget them, their disappearance not having to be questioned
Haymitch quoting Effie, that's a big, big, big deal to me
Literal controlling of the narrative
The arena being shaped like a giant eye- hammering home the BB themes of Orwell, and all the eye imagery mentioned in the earlier chapters
Haymitch literally being in a cage, but a golden one, like a pet canary
Haymitch being fed "by hand like you would a pet dog"
"We will finish this journey together"
The Hanging Tree
Louella and Lou Lou appearing in Haymitch's dreams, dressed identically and asking "which of us is which?" Coupled with Maysilee and Merrilee, and Haymitch meant to have had twin sisters, strongly emphasises themes of doubling. If linked to the overarching themes of propaganda, you might say that twins represent a truth or lie, both becoming indistinguishable from one another. This is especially prevalent when considering Lou Lou.
Fire is catching
"I roam around the yard like a stray dog, curl up under her window, yearning for her ghost to find me"
Haymitch's descent into alcoholism this chapter
Lenore Dove creating anti-propaganda, keeping Haymitch alive from the grave, with orange fingernails
"With that, she condemns me to life," meaning both being forced to stay alive, and receiving a life-sentence of suffering
"Trying to forget is my full-time job now" >>> Haymitch finding himself relaying everything to Katniss and Peeta, in detail, because they asked, because he loves them
Effie trying to keep Haymitch sober
Haymitch being the unlucky foil to Katniss' success
Having nothing to live for granting Haymitch a position of power, as it did with Johanna
Haymitch having to relive it all on his birthday every year, watching more of 12 tributes, his flock, die each time
Oh Suzanne,
You told me all about it
the time that werent mine
and the trapped land of
waste and despair
Oh Suzanne,
I should have listened
I should have stayed
when you told me not to go
I should have waited
Oh Suzanne,
I wish I had you now
What am I to do?
You would know.
Your wise words
used to comfort me so.
Oh Suzanne,
You shouldn't have let me go
I should have waited
till the sun rose
before i ventured forth
through time and space
i can no more feel
your soft embrace
Oh, Suzanne
