      Helene started a bit when she found her youngest rushing into her room. It was very uncustomary for anyone to barge into the Queen’s chambers...save for the King, of course. 

      She slightly widened her eyes as he hid. But she put the pieces together rather quickly when she heard her other sons’ laughter coming from the end of the hallway. The twins, she presumed from their voices as they tauntingly called out for Hans. 

      She glanced at her youngest before standing and walking over to the door, quietly closing it and giving him just a little bit of sanctuary for the time being. 

      ❝Cowering only makes it worse,❞ she said softly.

{ Hans always hated his red hair since it was such an indicator that he was really a Westerguard. As a kid he would try to dirty it as an act of defiance, only to be scolded about not looking "royal" from a maid or something. Appearances were everything to the family anyway. }

Ooooh! Ooooh! Let me add to this! Like, because of his red hair, he was considered an ‘ill omen’ when he became a naval officer (A real sailor superstition apparently according to that wonderful google) so he tried to disguise it by making his hair brown. Of course, it didn’t work but he tried.

At one point he tried to cut it but to little avail. And he even considered using clothing dye to change his hair colour permanently, despite the risk of well losing all your hair. I can imagine that when he inevitably removes himself from the royal family, he’ll mark it by a change of appearance, including a drastic hair cut. Just for the symbolism.
