i had most of the week off because my supervisor very kindly and gently forced me into taking summer holiday and nenkyu (paid leave) on monday, tuesday, and wednesday. most of the teachers will be gone for obon week, so there wouldn’t have been any point coming into the office.
so what did i do with that time off?
i decided before i arrived here that i wanted to collect gotochi, or special postcards that are available only in their respective prefectures. they usually depict important things like places, foods, or cultural aspects unique to each prefecture. lots of people collect them and i thought they looked really neat, so on monday i went to the post office to start off my collection. i also went to the supermarket and the hyakuen store *prayer hands*
i also decided before i arrived that i wanted to experience different matsuris, or festivals. i was looking up matsuris to see in the prefecture and discovered one in fukuoka-shi for obon, which is a holiday kind of like day of the dead. people tend to go home to care for their dead loved ones’ graves, and light lanterns to help guide their spirits home. mitama matsuri in ohorikoen also does a lantern lighting of about 6,000 lanterns, so i got a couple people together and we went to go see it. the matsuri itself was pretty neat, but it was super hot and super crowded so the whole thing was pretty uncomfortable. i bought some grilled chicken skewers and mourned their loss after i accidentally dropped them on the ground. then we bought ‘super long potatoes’ which were, well, super long and potatoes. i wanted to play some games and get cotton candy, but i noticed only kids were playing and i figured the cotton candy would just melt immediately in the humidity. the lanterns were absolutely gorgeous though, and it was beautiful seeing so many people lining up to pray for their dead loved ones’ safe return home.
i am beginning to plan more mini-trips around kyushu at this point as well. i am planning a visit to karatsu for october, and i’d like to visit nagasaki in that timeframe too. we’ll see! i’ve already got 5 prefectures down, so only 42 prefectures left to visit.
