Today: Lock Reliefs x60 (some lefty) We do not use CNC milling machines, and we do not outsource machining... it’s all by hand. Each Lockside for every folder has a milled relief. That is what decides the detent and lock tension. If it’s too light, the blade may open in your pocket or close on your hand. Too heavy and it may swing poorly and have a “sticky” lock. The deciding factor in if this works can be decided by .005”. I assume that’s why a lot of companies have few or even one model. Each relief requires at least 2-3 passes to get the required depth, then cleaning passes to remove the tool marks. If any of these are off by .005 you may have failed the entire knife. It’s a science and passion most don’t care to learn because it’s not easy, ergo the rush to CNC or outsourcing. Yes, we are slower. Yes it takes longer. However, I’m in it because I enjoy the challenge and love pushing through to deliver a safe and functional handmade knife... versus easy money where I can charge people $400 profit on a $100 knife.
