She knows when she says things like this, he isn’t intending to hurt her. She knows he would never intend to cause her pain, but alas that is exactly what he does. Moments like this when she wishes he wasn’t the honest person she knew him to be, because a lie would be far kinder.

She tries not to let her physical reaction show, the way she feels as though she has been struck by his words. She is not sure if she succeeds.
