The Key to Gramercy Park

What do Julia Roberts, Thomas Edison, the Steinway family, James Cagney, Gregory Peck, a Ringling Bro., John Barrymore, Uma Thurman and Karl Lagerfeld, John Steinbeck and Margaret “The Wicked Witch of the West” Hamilton have in common?

They have all held one of the most coveted pieces of metal in Manhattan…a key to Gramercy Park.

There are 383 keys to Gramercy Park – the lock changes every year – shared among the buildings and residents that surround the beautifully landscaped, pristine and serene space. Others in the exclusive club are the National Arts Club, the Player’s Club, the Brotherhood Synagogue, the Calvary-St. George’s Church and the Gramercy Park Hotel.  Plus, some squirrels and birds get in despite not possessing a key.

Gramercy Park was founded in the 1800s by Samuel B. Ruggles, an early day urban planner, who, among his other accomplishments, created Union Square and named Lexington Avenue. Somebody had to.

Gramercy Park was fenced in the 1830s and locked in 1844, except for Christmas Eve when it is open to the public for caroling. Inside of the six-foot wrought iron fence is a magic garden of paths, manicured lawns, trees more than 100 years old and some sculptures including one on loan from the Calder Foundation and one of Ruggles. Some say the air smells better in the park.
