The Underdog
A couple of days before the first of the month, I was showing my apartment to a boy.
Okay, let me backtrack a little bit, about 10 days before the end of last month, my roommate decided he was moving out. We got along well, but there were certain tense moments, he wanted to us to be more friendly and I knew I didn’t want to hang out with him, and overall he just wanted to live by himself. He gave me veto power, (because he told me 1/20 about a 2/1 move out date) but I also wanted him out so the roommate hunt began.
So what was I saying? Right, I was showing my apartment to this boy, let’s call him the Underdog, because he's a dogwalker, like professionally. He also was an artist, and a comic, but his professional dogsitting made him seem like a good roommate match since it would keep him out of the apartment 2-3 nights a week (dogsitting at people’s homes).
I do notice his hands right away, they are big-ish and elegant with thick knuckled fingers, he seems sort of quiet and thoughtful, when I straighten my necklace, his gaze fixates on my throat and then on my lips. Even the way we talk to each other is easy, and feels weirdly intimate, we stand all close to each other.
So, maybe it’s needless to say that I felt a weird insta-attraction, but then thought to myself, I’m being dumb, and do not live with the guy when you want to suck on his fingers.
He leaves, we promise to keep in touch about the roommate situation. I meet a girl later that night who I choose as my new roommate, and the next day he texts me to say he found another, better fit. I say great, good luck. And I think to myself maybe I’ll hear from him, but I don’t.
Except, that a week later, someone I had matched with months ago on OkCupid writes me a message saying, “Weirdest icebreaker ever, but didn’t you show me your apartment last week?” and it’s him.
I write back “OMG, you just made my greatest nightmare come true, that someone on OkC randomly knows where I live…”
So, last week, we had our first date.
We meet at my favorite neighborhood bar, where the bartenders by now must think I'm a huuuuuuge slut, but whatever. We buy hot toddies, and cozy up to the bar and just start chatting. It's very easy, and his sort of tough outer shell opens up and he seems to be kind of a softy. It's a good time, and after 2 slowly drank drinks, we go back to my place to smoke a joint he had rolled.
We get up to my room and smoke, and then we get on my bed, and I'm telling him about N and he's asking me if we can make out "or whatever" to which I roll my eyes but we kiss, and it's great. We start rolling around on the bed, and it's strangely heady and exciting. When he has me sort of pinned under him, we’re smiling at each other, and he’s holding my face in those big hands, and he says “Oh, you have something in your teeth” and reaches his finger out and scrapes at my teeth, getting it off me. “Ew” I say half heartedly, holding still so he can get the offending thing off my teeth easier. But still, later I remembered this as the perfect example of how weirdly intimate it felt to be with him from the beginning.
At one point I am sitting on his lap and he's sitting up and we're making out and he grabs my hips and is moving me on him and I'm so excited that I can't stop giggling.
At another point, he's on top of me and we're making out, he stops, looks down at me, his fingers brushing my eyelashes, "I like you" he blurts out, looking surprised himself that he said it.
"I like you too" I admit smiling at him.
"I'm trying not to have too many expectations right now" he says.
"I think, if we keep seeing each other and like each other, we should be allowed to have some expectations." I respond.
"Ok, but I've been burned." he says.
"Yeah, I know the feeling." I say, and we go back to making out. We talk and cuddle, I get to suck lightly on his fingers and watch his eyes roll back in his head when I do. It's fun!
"I have to wake up early for work tomorrow," I say, "but let's hang out Saturday?"
"Yes please." he responds.
I'm so excited he didn't have any red flags, but don't worry, they all came rushing out at me on Saturday.
To be continued...
