Melbourne's old Blue Harris Trains, initially produced in 1956 to coincide with the Melbourne 56 Olympics.

The arrival of the Harris trains was intended as a statement to the world, that Melbourne was indeed a modern city and testament to this was it's new fleet of modern steel bodied electric trains!

Prior to this Melbourne's suburban train fleet consisted entirely of antiquated wooden caridge 'red rattler' Tait trains, dating back to early 20th century.

This part of Melbourne's old world was considered a bit of an embarrassment with the upcoming Olympics approaching, Melbourne was about to be presented on a world stage!

Harris Trains were in service until 1988, after which they were abruptly scrapped due to complaints surrounding the asbestos insulation content found within their carriage walls.

From 50 or more full sets once in service, only a couple of carriages now remain in museum storage. On mass the entire fleet of more than 200 plus carriages were sealed in something resembling sleeping bags, then burried in rock quarries in industrial parts of the outer suburbs.
