Oh man I'd forgotten that they listen to James' band's music specifically at the end of this ep and not only that but when Lyn calls Robbie talks to her with one bud still in his other ear AND then starts telling her about James and his music, God.

#so when he asked her for help a couple years later to find James’ stolen guitar #she must have been like oh yeah yep #but also james is so...happy in that end scene #sharing music sharing a part of himself sharing earbuds with robbie #and robbie letting him casually be a part of his own life too :3 #when they are so new together #also. robbie makes fun of james' taste in music in general in other eps #and he is not much of a classical music man so it would be so easy to end this ep #with him taking a dig at james and the music his band makes #but they never do make fun of one another where it actually stings #similar to say how quickly robbie drops the james bowing to liv nash incident years later #(and when they step over the line accidentally they are quick to apologise)#and there is just so much quiet care there ya know?#ah man im not a big fan of this ep #and yet there are still such nuggets of gold in it...such gold everywhere you look really #itv lewis #old school ties

Twelve years late to the party

(Disclaimer: this post has nothing at all to do with Maurice, despite the gif.)

I love subtitles. If they’re available, I have them on. If not, I’m anxious and keep trying to read the screen anyway. Now and then it pays off in unexpected ways.

(The following is something that I’m sure that those of you who follow Laurence Fox’s music career (or jazz, like, at all) have known about since forever (so you folks will probably want to skip this), but I don’t so I didn’t, so this was new to me and delightful.)

I needed to check something in Lewis s1e03: “Old School Ties” so I put on my dvd, switched on the subtitles, and skipped ahead to the first possibly-relevant-but-I-couldn’t-quite-remember scene, which is of Hathaway’s band rehearsing. As the scene cuts from Nicky Turnbull’s speech at the Oxford Union to a churchful of music, the subtitles claim: “(Gregorio Allegri’s “Miserere Mei” playing)”. So I listen, and… wait. I thought I knew how that piece sounds. *rewind, listen, rewind, listen*

Huh. Really? The Allegri Miserere? Isn’t that this piece?:

Okay, yeah, seems to be, so what…?

Closing credits to the rescue: “Miserere Mei by Gregorio Allegri, arranged by Tim Garland, performed by Acoustic Triangle.”

OH! It’s a jazz arrangement and it’s fricking glorious. You can hear the whole thing here. And my favorite part? From what I can tell (and please correct me if I’m wrong), the other three members of “Hathaway’s band” are, in fact, Acoustic Triangle: Tim Garland (soprano sax), Gwilym Simcock (piano), and Malcolm Creese (bass).

Now I hope you will pardon me while I go listen to it on an endless loop for the next three days.
