Boy the no longer so subtle psychological torture employed by Tumblr these days to try and get you to go ‘ad free’ is really distasteful. Like, I can only be on the site for a short bit before someone’s nose hair or toenails ( for the sixth time in what is starting to feel like an endless progression ) forces my finger toward he eject button and I’m out.
This feels like a crossroads moment for the site.
I am a content creator of the variety Tumblr seems to be trying to attract, but have held back, and quietly cultivated a feed that generally brings me great pleasure that I visit most days to push that blob of mercury around to see what pops up. But I knew they were headed this direction when they first started pushing ads. It makes terrible sense that the only way to get you to change your comfortable habit of quietly scrolling would be to make you increasingly uncomfortable. But does it have to be this way?
I had been considering a move to subscription anyway and had even ‘blazed’ a few things to try and help myself and support the site. But boy do I hate feeling manipulated and increasingly that is how I feel here.
Would it be possible in the spirit that engendered this space to have a free front that is in fact already a clean, ad free, safe space, free of manipulation in which you are invited to discover some secret world behind door # 7, but if you don’t want to, that’s fine, scroll happily or darkly, enrich yourself with art and humor and personal and political views that are both akin to yours and even maybe challenge you to have a nice day, or at least get thru it without hurting yourself or others.
bliss out,
