A woman came into the motel office today and told me that she's here to check in. I ask her name, but I can't seem to find her reservation. She then tells me that she doesn't have a reservation, she just wants to rent a room for tonight. We have no vacancy; it says so in big bright neon letters above the parking lot, and on a sign hung at eye level on the office door which she couldn't have missed. I tell her we're booked up, and I can see her physically transition into Karen mode. Her posture changes, she stares me dead in the eyes and says accusingly "well, now where am I supposed to stay?" I don't know ma'am, you should have called ahead and made a reservation, I don't owe you a motel room. She asks if there are any rooms on the other side (the motel has two complexes). I explain to her that the other side isn't a separate motel, it's part of this one, and it's all booked. She tells me she's knows that already, she's been staying at this motel for 25 years.
Apparently not long enough to learn what "No Vacancy" means.
