Just help me
“But thy hast been scorned and whipped for involving thyself in witchcraft. Why come to me and only damage your reputation more?”
“Please” she whispered. She did not imagine that, at the tender age of twenty and three, she would have been cast from her family for lying with another woman- though that was not what the rest of the village had been told for they had been told that she was learning independence before she would be picked by a suitor for marriage so that she may be useful for more than children- and whipped violently for ‘heinous crimes in the face of God’. How could she have known that being open with her admiration for the Pagan Goddesses she was shown by her grandmother would end up with her being whipped by the priest of the village?
“Please” she whispered again, in case the older woman had not heard her, “just help me” Sighing, Elizabeth helped the beaten and bloody girl to her feet and over to her table to sit while she concocted remedy after remedy for her pain and to heal. Elizabeth helped her broken lover remove the strips of her dress from her shoulders and unlaced the hidden bodice so she could clean the wounds.
A small intake of breath was all that was heard in the quiet cottage as Elizabeth saw the full extent of the damage. “I- I-I’ll go get some fresh snow to soothe the burning and numb it before I do anything else.” She said and fled to the cold mercy outside.
Returning with a bowl of snow, she wrapped a small portion in a rag and dabbed at the angry red flesh of her shoulders. It was all Maryse could do to not cry out as Elizabeth cleaned the lashes decorating her shoulders. After many tears from both women, Elizabeth dressed the whipped slashes with dressings liberally smeared with every healing or numbing poultice she could think of.
“There my dear, dry thy glistening eyes, I’m here to care for you.”
