This recipe for Old-Fashioned Doughnuts is a healthier version of the traditional dish. Since they are baked rather than fried, they can be enjoyed anytime of the day without feeling guilty. Savor the comforting tastes of nutmeg and cinnamon in a substantial doughnut that goes well with tea or coffee.
Ingredients: 2 cups all-purpose flour. 1/2 cup granulated sugar. 2 tsp baking powder. 1/2 tsp salt. 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg. 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon. 2 large eggs. 1/2 cup low-fat milk. 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted. 1 tsp vanilla extract. Vegetable oil, for frying. Powdered sugar, for dusting.
Instructions: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon. In another bowl, beat the eggs and then add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix well. Combine the wet and dry ingredients, stirring until a soft dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and roll it to about 1/2 inch thickness. Using a donut cutter or a round cookie cutter, cut out doughnut shapes and use a smaller cutter for the holes in the center. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or a large, heavy-bottomed pot to 350F 175C. Carefully place the doughnuts into the hot oil and fry until they are golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove the doughnuts with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Dust the doughnuts with powdered sugar while they are still warm. Serve and enjoy your healthy Old-Fashioned Doughnuts!
