Oldfields, or the Lilly House, was built in 1913 and became the home of J.K. Lilly Jr. in 1932. Lilly was the president and CEO of the pharmaceutical company founded by his grandfather, Eli Lilly. It served as his family’s home until his death in 1965. The house has been restored to closely resemble its appearance in the 1930s. It is now part of the 152 acre campus known as Newfields which includes the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

This past weekend, I visited a very special place in my life in north Northumberland County. This is where the seeds of Yawnder were planted way way back. My first visit to the #peterboroughpetroglyphs was very inspiring as well. Starting next week, I’ll be diving deep into the #oldfields during my residency with @criticalmass in #PortHope, Ontario. I look forward to working with the community there and sharing my personal connection with #NorthumberlandCounty. The work that I’m making this summer and during this residency will be apart of some larger digital projects. Do you have thoughts that burn & burn & burn inside you? For me, it’s the old fields. These are the spaces between places, symbolic of the gaps between all things, that may be reconsidered as we look for answers in these unprecedented times when the need for physical distance and social succession is bringing new perspectives to help solve extreme challenges. #oldfields is an ecological term referring to lands once maintained and then abandoned, where a natural succession occurs that can either result in the rapid return of a native ecosystem or change toward a completely different system with often unpredictable dynamics and impacts. These emerging ecosystems found in the marginal, deserted lands of my rural community have provided a backdrop for a new cast of wayward young characters making their own marks amid uncertainty. These overlooked lands provide a paradoxical landscape for the youthful explorers who find themselves in uncharted territory, accompanied by figments and fathoms, inundated by swarms in a misty atmosphere. .
