*it’s late afternoon. The girls are hanging out in their shared room. And by hanging out, they mean sitting in complete silence whilst tension simmers between them. Sister Hopkins shifts uncomfortably on her bed, there’s clearly something on her mind, and Olive notices, opting to ignore it. Hopkins has been ignoring her since they went to lunch, so she figures she’s done something wrong, and doesn’t want to disturb the peace.*
"Hey Olive?"
*Hopkins pipes up, her voice higher than usual and slightly hesitant. She slides out of bed, stepping towards where Olive is sitting down, her eyes drawn to a book of some kind, something old with worn pages and some unpronounceable latin title. Olive doesn’t say anything, not yet, but she bookmarks her page and closes the book halfway, a gesture of half-interest in what Hopkins might have to say.*
“Uhm, I just think I need to tell you.. how I feel about you. I think there’s been a little bit of confusion between us.”
*Hopkins sounds incredibly unsure, like she's wary Olive might decide to insult her, or even worse, to simply get up and leave. Olive hasn't given Hopkins a reason to fear her, but they're both aware she has a tendency to be blunt, and is difficult to read. Hopkins always seems a little too cautious of how Olive might react to her presence, it bothers olive a little bit, which is odd considering olive never previously cared when people we scared of her, but for some reason Hopkins is someone she wishes would be a little more open. She brushes aside the tought, keeping a level head and replying simply.*
“And how is it that you feel?”
*Olive realises after the fact that she sounds like she's already bored, and curses herself for her rudeness. As a way of salvaging the moment, she closes the book completely, a grand gesture by her standards. To have her full attention on someone when it's not required of her, like in the instance of authority, is a great gift for Olive to give someone, and Hopkins notices, feeling the sudden spotlight and shifting awkwardly under the attention.*
“Well…” *she takes a final deep breath* “I-really-really-like-you-and-I-was-womdering-if-you-felt-the-same-since-you-took-me-to-lunch-yesterday-and-it-felt-like-a-date-but-I-wasn't-really-sure-if-it-was-a-date-so-I-kinda-freaked-out-because-you-never-really-show-how-you-feel-and-part-of-me-feels-like-you-hate-me-and-also-youre-kind-of-mean-to-me-sometimes-but-I-kinda-think-I-might-be-into-that-and-that's-why-i-like-you-but-I'm-not-really-sure-what-to-make-of-it-and-it's-a-little-conflicting-honestly-but-umm-yeah-I-guess-what-I'm-saying-is WILL YOU GO OUT WITH ME?… please?”
*The silence that stretches is broken only by the sound of Hopkins desperately catching her breath. Olive has to take a moment to process the barrage of barely-strung-together words that were just verbally tossed at her, and the more she processes the more confused she becomes.*
“…you what?”
*Hopkins isn’t sure what’s going on, but what she is sure of is that she just made herself look like a massive idiot, and that the response she got from Olive was definitely not the one she was hoping for. It takes Hopkins almost as long as it took Olive to catch up with the words that had come out of her own mouth just minutes ago, and when she does, the realisation hits her like a brick to the face. a brick handcrafted with the pure essence of mortification and a slight dash of wanting to take a long walk off the shortest pier she can find.*
“… WHY DID I SAY THAT!?”
*Hopkins doesn’t wait for the embarrassment to settle in further before she turns on her heel and bolts out of the door. She’s not sure where she plans to go, but she knows it’s somewhere far away from whatever just happened, part of her feels like crying, the other like screaming, and all of her just wishes she’d never opened her mouth in the first place. That she’d never had these feelings at all. Of course Olive is confused, of course she doesn’t like her back! She’s way cooler, and prettier, and smarter and everything! She’s so much better than Hopkins in every way, and a good Mormon girl like her probably has a bright future with her husband and five billion kids… why would she ruin that with a girl like Hopkins? By the time she’s calmed down, she finds herself sitting under a secluded tree not far from the mission hut, waiting for someone or something to come along and tell her what the heck to do.* *She takes a moment, and when the sun starts to set, and the mosquitos start getting a little too annoying Hopkins reluctantly heads back to the mission hut. She remembers what Elder Mckinley told her about being there to help, and for a second she wonders if this is something worth bother him for. He's already got enough on his plate as district leader, and she doesn't want to be a bother over some silly relationship troubles, especially when she just got here, but her one confidante, the person who she normally seeks help from is the one person she couldn't bear to be around right now. She decides instead to just leave it. she can figure it out herself, though not without a lot of very obvious moping around the other Elders as they start to settle into the common areas for the night. Hopkins doesn't necessarily like seeking attention in this way, but when she finds it hard to go to someone herself, she has a habit of acting miserable until they come up to her. It's silly and childish, but she's too busy wallowing in her misery to care.*
