Opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics (France, 1924).
The main Olympic stadium was the Stade du Colombes, pictured above. Formerly a racecourse that had been converted into the Stade du Matin in 1907, it was renamed the Stade du Colombes in 1920, and is now known as the Stade Olympique Yves-du-Manoir. It was refurbished for the 1924 Games, with a total capacity of 45,000 that included seating for 20,000 people. The stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as track and field, football and rugby. A new aquatics stadium and tennis courts were built nearby.
The Olympic flag flies for the first time in Antwerp (1920).
The Games were awarded to Antwerp as a commemoration of those lost in the war. The opening ceremony included the first raising of the Olympic Flag, the first Athletes' Oath (recited by Victor Boin), and the first time doves were released as a symbol of peace.
