Lokius. A/B/O dynamics. Omegaverse. Beta Mobius. Omega Loki. Mpreg. Pregnant Loki.
Loki had had the misfortune of finding out that his True Mate was an awful person. He was cruel and short-sighted and greedy. Someone who saw Loki not as a Mate, not as a Luna to help run their pack once married. But someone to use.
True Mates were preferred when it came to anyone, but none more than when it came to pack Alphas. A True Mate bond was considered the strongest mate bond there was, so it made sense. And everyone just assumed that your True Mate was always a perfect match for you.
Loki had no idea why the moon goddess had yoked him to someone like this horrible man, but he had initially tried to do his best. He had tried to be a good Luna to the pack, but there was nothing he could do about the fact that they had a horrible tyrant for an Alpha.
He had looked at Loki like one looks at livestock, as if he were cattle or a broodmare. What could Loki bring to the table for him? He could unite their packs, which Odin had immediately refused. Their packs would not become one. This had pissed off his Mate, but there was the next best thing. Allyship. Knowing that you had the Odinson pack on your side if ever you needed them, if you ever you feel upon hard times or if you were attacked by a stronger pack, was an important chess move, indeed.
Loki was beautiful, very beautiful. And an Omega. Which meant he was someone that could be shown off like a trophy and he was someone who could produce heirs. Loki's prowess in battle and his physical strength alone meant that he would be a prime candidate to make strong, beautiful Alpha pups for his Mate.
Loki himself had been son to the Odinson pack Alpha and Luna, which meant that he was raised in the ways of leadership, diplomacy, and all of the things that were necessary for running a pack. And being an Omega, he had also been instructed since presenting as such in the ways of domesticity and being a helpmeet to a pack Alpha and to the pack itself. He had been taught since he was teenager how to be a good Luna, in addition to how to be a good pack leader since practically birth.
His father had not wanted to hear it when Loki said he didn't have a good feeling about this union. He didn't have a good feeling about the man who was his True Mate. He was told to do his duty and he would learn to love his Mate and he would learn to get along.
So, Loki had done so. He had tried, anyway. The wedding had taken place, the Mating had taken place.
But then when he became pregnant and was far enough along that they could tell these things, it was discovered he was carrying a baby girl. His Alpha was furious, had berated Loki for hours, thrown things, screamed at him, terrified him. He had the old-fashioned view that the first and second born should both be Male, and even then Loki still could have been considered to have failed if either of the children had grown to present as anything other than an Alpha.
Loki had been terrified, not for himself, but for the babe in his womb. He would have, could have fought back if not for that. He was afraid that if he tried or if he further antagonized his Mate then harm would come to the baby.
He had been entirely unprepared for his Mate to Reject him suddenly. The Rejection was painful, and it was risky. If Loki dared Accept then he could be putting the baby in harm's way that way. Not all pregnancies survived the Rejection of a True Mate. In fact, most did not. He was not sure why the moon goddess made it that way, but perhaps it was intended to be a mercy...so that there was no tie and nothing for your True Mate to come after you for later and try to hurt you or hurt the child. But truly, that was just a guess. No one knew for certain.
But if he didn't Accept then there was every chance he could face consequences that he couldn't fight his way out of that would still result in the death of his precious babe. The only thing good to come out of this damnable union.
So, he took his chances and Accepted the Rejection.
He'd never felt anything so painful as the Rejection taking hold. It felt like being Ripped in two. But the babe survived, and Loki counted that a win. They were free.
And what was better was knowing that his former True Mate would never be given a second chance at finding a True Mate. He had squandered his one chance, had abused and not appreciated Loki and then had Rejected him for a reason so stupid as not producing him a male heir as his first born. The moon goddess never smiled upon such a thing.
Loki could have a chance at finding another True Mate. He wasn't sure he ever wanted one again, after what he went through with the first one, but knowing that he had the chance while his stupid former Mate did not worked to make him feel better. Petty, perhaps, but Loki didn't care.
But Loki did not return home to the Odinson pack to tell them what had happened. He was afraid to. What if his father blamed him? What if his father punished him for accepting the Rejection? Or what if his father just looked at him with that look of disappointment that he was so used to and said something callous that he inevitably thought was kind but was anything but?
Loki didn't want to deal with that.
Worse, what if he made Loki go back? That would absurd but...Odin had put a lot into this union. He might well still try to figure out a way to salvage this with Loki as a bargaining chip.
So, instead, he used his magic (rare amongst the Wolves) to transport himself far away.
His wolf reminded him that he had some money in his pocket and he used it to buy himself something to eat and a small room with a tiny window and a narrow bed and wash basin and that was all, at an inn within Werewolf territory several countries away.
Good thing werewolf currency was universal amongst the Wolf Packs everywhere.
He had been downstairs having his dinner in the dining area, when the beta who owned the inn came up to check on him personally.
Loki blushed, because the man was handsome with kind eyes and honestly just Loki's type. But he reminded himself that he needed time and space more than he needed a tumble.
Still, this afforded him an opportunity he had not anticipated. The owner of the inn, charmingly titled The Dew Drop Inn and carried a double meaning which turned out to be a hallmark of the proprietor's humor, was looking to hire an extra pair of hands for help in the dining area.
Mobius, the man was named, had promised not to make Loki carry anything too heavy and if he felt that something was too heavy then he only had to say so and someone else would carry it.
And he also promised that Loki did not have to take any guff or fresh attitudes from the patrons, if someone started a problem or got fresh with him Mobius would either take care of it himself or turn a blind eye to Loki knocking someone silly himself.
Loki had never once before considered himself someone who would do work like this for a living, but he found himself agreeing. He didn't know where else to go, and this would allow him to stay here. He wouldn't have to wonder when or where he would get his next meal, or whether he would have somewhere warm to sleep.
His room had been upgraded immediately, as well, to something more comfortable and with enough space for a crib and all the things he would need to care for a pup once it came.
Over the next few weeks, Loki showed more obviously in his pregnancy. Before, he had been surprised at how little he had been showing, but now there was a visible little bump in his tunic and everyone he worked with at the inn had exclaimed over it. It had made Loki smile.
Mobius was extremely understanding of Loki not always feeling well or frequently trips to the restroom, and his absolutely bizarre cravings.
He was never denied food or tutted at for eating too much of the inn's food, or anything like that.
In fact, many people who stopped by the inn wondered if Loki was Mobius's mate, although a quick sniff (which was rude and if they did it around Loki they would regret it) proved that wrong. It only served to confuse them, because Mobius was so indulgent and caring and hands-on with Loki. Mobius treated him like a mate who was expecting, absolutely doting on Loki.
Though, it was considered odd for an Omega and a Beta to pair off. It was believed that in most cases Omegas preferred Alphas.
But Loki had gotten a taste of what it was like to be with an Alpha and he honestly hadn't met very many that he'd liked before then, either. So, he would not prefer an Alpha, thank you very much.
Then again, he thought of Mobius were an Alpha then perhaps he might change his mind. But he wasn't, and Loki would be lying if he said that wasn't part of what made him feel so safe around Mobius in the beginning.
But by now, Loki thought he was ready for that tumble thank you very much.
Mobius had been very surprised, and blushed adorably, when Loki had invited him into his room one night but he had gone in.
The door closed and locked and neither of them were seen until the next afternoon.
