Scrolling through tons of writing prompt ideas, whump prompts, living weapon prompts, and other intense prompt ideas that would be absolutely delicious to dive into for writing just makes me wish I didn't have to work. I'd much rather write about diving headfirst into exploring Omega Red's trauma instead.
Rant incoming
Apologies beforehand for any Wolverine or Sabretooth fans who come across this. I just need to get this off my chest because this has been a building frustration I have with both these characters and how Marvel treats their relationship with Omega Red for a long while now. This is much more of a private complaint of mine against them both, hence me putting this rant on my side blog. This is just me screaming to let this out. If anyone enjoys these characters and/or their relationship to Arkady, don't let this change how you view them. This is just my personal opinion that has become too much of a dead weight on my soul to keep carrying around in silence anymore. So I'm speaking up.
Now, don't get me wrong, I am absolutely excited to see Omega Red appearing in the upcoming Insomniac Wolverine game. I am thrilled that he's going to appear and that he actually looks pretty comic accurate. What I absolutely hate is how they are butchering his backstory and trying to erase his trauma at the hands of Team X for the sake of pushing the popular characters, making them look good, and whitewashing their crimes in the public eye, while dragging Omega Red's reputation through the mud. It reeks of victim silencing.
I know as a fact that after the game comes out, there's going to be a lot more "experts" out there who claim to understand Omega Red (especially the comics version) and will unironically say that he's "worse than Sabretooth." I've seen that take on Reddit and other websites before, and I highly doubt it's going to get any better once this game comes out. I just know it's only going to get worse and make the fight Omega Red fans have to educate the masses about the truth of his character even harder than it already is.
If you're one of those people who honestly believes that Omega Red is worse than Sabretooth already and think he's irredeemable, kindly FUCK OFF. I already know what kind of "fan" you are.
This is a problem I have always seen when it comes to how people will view Wolverine and Sabretooth in comparison to Omega Red. People have these opinions they fling around about Arkady, and I can tell that none of them have actually read or understood a single comic Omega Red has ever appeared in. They focus more on the impression they have of him instead of ever looking at or understanding what has actually happened to Omega Red over the 30+ years he has been a character in Marvel comics. Arkady's life is absolutely horrible, and these two characters -- and the rest of Team X -- have made it so much worse for him over the years without ever once taking responsibility for the harm they caused him.
And now, Insomniac is writing over all of those crimes completely to hide their culpability, slapping Lady Deathstrike's origins onto Arkady to turn him into a shallow, mustache-twirling villain that Logan and Victor can beat up together with no remorse. Because they're erasing his entire backstory and trauma for the sake of the popular characters and the popular team-up dynamic. Arkady HAS to look bad so they can look good. And I am absolutely tired of seeing that happen.
Logan, Victor, Maverick, and John Wraith, they ALL ruined Arkady's life. Arkady is not their buddy or pal, or even their villian. He is their victim. They stole the C-Synthesizer and condemned him to a tortured existence where he needed to kill to live. And he had to survive like that for decades. It's a horrible thing to condemn a man to, but they all did it without a shred of remorse for their actions. Logan and Maverick actively made it even worse, too, by deliberately sabotaging every attempt Arkady made to cure himself so he wasn't forced to kill. As an Omega Red fan, I am still waiting for an apology from any of them. And I probably will always be kept waiting.
The Insomniac game will make this impression in the public eye even worse, and I am dreading what writers might do to Arkady in the comics and the progress he's made as a character away from them both just so we can have yet another Wolverine/Sabretooth team-up story. If his story and progress as a character over the past 10 years of stories have to be sacrificed to those two ever again, I'm done. They will have taken any remaining good grace I had for Wolverine and Sabretooth away.
I will have to see how Arkady is handled in the game, but right now, I don't have any hope that his story will be given any grace. He will just be written as evil with no nuance, none of his trauma, none of his own backstory, none of his own culture, nothing that allows people to see how he has been victimized by Team X over and over again and how they are actually the villains of the story, not Omega Red.
Because what has Omega Red actually achieved as a bad guy in the comics?? Absolutely nothing. His greatest claim to fame is going 18 hours non-stop against Logan in a fight and winning. The rest of the time?? He's been enslaved, he's been kept away from the medical device needed to save his life, he's been imprisoned, he's been tortured, he's been further experimented on, he's been manipulated to fight for other's causes, he's been backstabbed, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. He's never won a battle, never achieved a single thing as a villain. There's nothing in his actual story that you can point to that makes him any worse or better than Logan or Victor. And writers need to stop trying to force him in a box he doesn't fit into in order to cater to the more popular characters and their sometimes very rabid fanbase.
This dehumanization of Omega Red simply has to stop, and at this point, the only way I can actually see that happening is to get Arkady as FAR away from Logan, Victor, and the rest of Team X as humanly possible. They hold him back and dimish his backstory to make it sound like they were the ones who were wronged and harmed instead of Arkady, whose life they absolutely ruined because they were serving the political interests of the US. They blame the victim of their cruelty, and now, with this game coming out, they're trying to take away everything that shows and explains why Omega Red behaves the way he does. He's not a petty villain who is "out for revenge for being kicked out of Team X." But unfortunately, the masses are going to think that's all he is.
I'm so frustrated. I'm angry. I'm tired of Marvel and writers making up excuses to erase what was done to Omega Red by these men. Because it not only strips Omega Red of crucial aspects of his character for the sake of others, but it also eliminates the kinds of complexities that show Wolverine and Sabretooth aren't saints either. If you need to erase and silence a victim's voice and dehumanize them to prop up your main characters, that's not a good story.
Let Logan and Victor be true to their characters. Team X is not a team made up of heroes, and the people they hurt over the years of their operations did not deserve what happened to them. I know that this game is a different version of the characters and their story, but the way I have seen things like this bleed into opinions about these characters in the comics always does far more harm than good. I am bracing for the shitstorm that is going to come for Omega Red fans after this game finally drops.
Arkady, you seriously deserve so much better than getting continuously saddled by these two and getting dragged into a supporting role of their "will they, won't they" relationship. I wish Marvel would actually free you from them. I wish they would give you a proper Origins comic that lets the truth about you be more easily shown. And I wish that Marvel would stop trying to bury the truth about you because no one cares enough about you to actually treat you right.
I wish they would let you be your own man, not a prop for Team X to punch, harm and try to kill. Maybe someday, I will get that, but I doubt that day will be coming anytime soon. Especially with whatever gets done to you in the Insomniac game.

The second annual Omega Red Week event is now over, but I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who participated in this year's event. We had so much wonderful content given to us this year and more people taking part in our little event, which is simply amazing to see for the Omega Red fan community!
We are seriously so blessed by the artistic and writing talent that we have among us, and every post this week gave us something unique and special that really brings a smile to my face to see created and shared. You fans are what make celebrations like this worth it!!

In the meantime, just because Omega Red Week is over doesn't mean we have to stop sharing what we love about Arkady. How do you feel abt the omega red design in the new wolverine game trailer? would ya make some changes if you had the chance?
Design-wise, Arkady is fantastic! I was afraid when I first started seeing things for the game that Omega Red's design wouldn't be accurate to how he looks in the comics, but surprisingly, Insomniac delivered a really, really good Omega Red design.
Like, this is fantastic!! He has his big shoulderpads, he has his grenades (that we never see him actually use, which is so hilarious to me), pale skin, red eyes. He doesn't look like he's running around dehydrated either. And his HAIR!!!
God, I love the design choice they went with for his hair. Look at him!! He braids it!! Little intricate braids with their little baubles of decoration on it. I seriously would not mind if they started dressing up Arkady's hair a bit more fancy like this in the comics. It looks good!!
There's only two things that I would change, and they are small. One: I would do away with the scarification of the Omega symbol on his forehead and give him his actual headband to wear again. It just doesn't look right to me when they keep his forehead bare and try to slap some kind of tattoo-esque design directly on his skin. Arkady himself has said in the comics that he can't get a tattoo, and with his healing factor, I don't think scarification would work either. Just give him his cute headband back.
Two: he needs his vambraces over his forearms. Right now, they just look too bare for a man who is decked head to toe in armor. The coils and where they are anchored are sort of a tender spot that I think should be better protected. He could go full glove, but given that these fights don't seem to be taking place in snowy scenes, it's not necessary to have his fingers covered. But forearms could really benefit from vambraces.

For those that might struggle to read the text, this is what it says across the two pages:
Page 1 text: "Omega Red is a Russian mutant and a former member of Team X. He was ousted from the group by Logan, resulting in Omega Red's deep-seated thirst for revenge. To this end, he has joined the Reavers and has enhanced himself cybernetically."
Page 2 text: "Omega Red can drain the life force from others. His desire to use this ability on other mutants was the reason he was kicked out of Team X."
Really not sure how to feel about this background change. I kinda figured one would have to happen for him to fit in this universe, but I didn't think they were going to make Arkady up and volunteer for this, and to be motivated by something as petty as revenge.
No C-Synthesizer?? Again?? I'm starting to see a trend. I know the plot makes Logan look bad, Marvel, but c'mon!! Arkady's medical issues are a HUGE part of his character and a reason why some of us feel he resonates with us. I'm actually a bit annoyed that they're cutting out some of the things that I thematically enjoy exploring with him the most and then stealing Lady Deathstrike's backstory to give to him instead. That doesn't seem right to me.
But hey, at least he's an equal opportunity hater. Everyone can catch those hands!!
A teaser trailer was dropped for the Wolverine Insomniac game during the D23 Panel held last night. It gives us some more footage and clearer shots of action than some of the earlier teases I saw for this game. Here's the link for it if you want to watch:
And here are a few screenshots of Arkady from the trailer. From looking at this footage, I realized that Arkady does indeed have his hair tied up with his high ponytail, though you can't see it well from the front. Watching him do his various hairflips in this when you slow down the frames, though, allows you to see it.
He looks good!!! The only other thing I noticed to nitpick a bit about is how far back on his wrists his coils seem to come out.
That's pretty far back. I'm used to seeing it come out closer to his wrist bone. Maybe it would look better if he was actually wearing his gloves or vambraces. I just noticed watching this trailer that those are absent.

It is the final day of Omega Red Week! It's been an incredible journey with all of you this past week, and I have loved every moment of this celebration we've shared together.
The final prompt for this week was "Reminisce," and I decided to write a piece that explores some of Arkady's struggles with adjusting to life with the C-Synthesizer, with a flashback to the day of the Team X raid making up the main body of the story. I hope anyone who reads enjoys it!
