Okay so in my Rocklandrian fic I made Rocky temporarily smaller (forced by a medical treatment using a synthesized hormone produced naturally during starvation that makes the whole body and exoskeleton smaller) on the Tau Ceti mission, and then had them grow 60% larger with a growth hormone treatment when they got home.

Now I'm considering: what if other Eridians are bigger, but Rocky isn't. Rocky is like half the size of the average Eridian. Giant Adrian (as depicted in a lot of fan art for some reason (I like it)) is "normal" and Rocky has dwarfism. And they're so tired of being called cute and being teased and made fun of and underestimated their whole entire life and career leading up to the mission.

And then Grace calls them cute and compares them to a dog (based on size, as he does in his internal monologue in the book) at some point on the journey back to Erid, hoping it would be funny and also maybe trying to flirt. But holy shit, does that does not land right. It's actually so deeply hurtful and heartbreaking and humiliating for someone Rocky loves to say something like that. And Grace doesn't understand why Rocky is so devastated and angry because he hasn't seen another Eridian and he doesn't know yet.
