Alex Chilton "My Rival" 10" EP. Another RSD Omnivore sale piece. The "Like Flies on Sherbet" version of "My Rival" is actually my favorite Alex Chilton solo song. I'd love to have that on vinyl. And while I have been known to piss away large sums of money on some vinyl in the past, I rarely ever do it for one song. Anyway, this is a cool little artifact like that Nilsson LP. Probably wouldn't have bought this if it was a 12" as I lack the space but I do have space where I stash my 10" records as I probably have less than 40 of them. The liner notes alone, for the price I paid, are almost worth the price of admission. Allen’s first ever recorded reading of Howl is getting a proper release treatment from our good friends at Omnivore Records!  Digital/  CD / Vinyl  & limited Red Vinyl (of course)  Street Date APRIL 2, 2021.

Ginsberg’s first public reading of his epic poem “Howl” took place at San Francisco’s famous Six Gallery in October of 1955. Along with Ginsberg, the evening included readings by Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen, Philip Lamantia, and Michael McClure. Poet and anthologist Kenneth Rexroth was the emcee, and Jack Kerouac, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and Neal Cassady were in attendance. Unfortunately,  no one recorded that reading, and it was long thought that the first recording of “Howl” was from a reading in  Berkeley that following March.

Before  Berkeley, however, Allen had traveled to Reed College with Gary Snyder to give a series of readings. Snyder and Philip Whalen had been students at Reed and had studied under the legendary calligrapher Lloyd Reynolds.  On February 13 and 14, 1956, Snyder and Ginsberg read at Reed, with the Valentine’s Day performance recorded,  but then forgotten till it surfaced in  2007.

Chris Bell - I Am the Cosmos (4 Men With Beards ‎– 4M 143) Really looking forward to the @omnivorerecordings reissue of this never happened classic. Some folks might - quietly - assert that Chris Bell was responsible for the sound that propelled the Big Star sound. I'm not saying what I assert; I'm just saying that if you like Big Star - and if you listen to this record - you'll be transported to 1970s midwestern rock and roll paradise. This Four Men With Beards pressing is okay, but has some IGD happening that I'm not willing to have my system take the blame for. @omnivorerecordings, make this a beauty. This photo’s iIncluded in McDarrah’s photographic essay book  PRIDE: photographs after Stonewall, recently back in print from OR books, with forwards by Hilton Als and Allen Ginsberg. From Allen’s forward:

“Think of the historic importance of coming out of the closet!  Stonewall’s cry echoed round the world! Spiritual liberation meant gay liberation also, the liberation of individual veracity against hypocrisies of church and state and age-old social sadism. A revelation of actuality in midst of mental hallucination an emotional repression. Truth against “lies age-old, age-thick”

What was the fix to begin with? Legendary gay bars owned by organized crime paid off the New York police, and if they didn’t they were closed down. Something went wrong with the payoffs at Stonewall Inn. So the customary repression of gay social life was motiv’d by hypercritical greed and sadism. As the sign says GAY PROHIBITION CORRUPTS COPS AND FEEDS MAFIA”
