Rykodisc
Oranj Symphonette – Oranj Album. 1998 : Rykodisc.
Paper insert for the CD packaging of Rhyme by Marty Willson-Piper, released by U.S. label Rykodisc in 1989.
I almost described this as the insert for a “longbox,” but that’s not quite accurate, even if that term tends to get used as shorthand for the long packaging CDs (mainly in the USA, I think) briefly came in from the late 80s to early 90s. I suddenly recalled the name for discs that were packaged in long plastic sleeves: “blister packs.” And this was the associated paper insert.
As this is just a piece of paper, it doesn’t sit quite as nicely next to my other longboxes. But it’s managed to survive 30+ years of moves and storage nonetheless.
My classic album Spread Your Evil Wings and Fly is now up on Bandcamp
https://kochalka.bandcamp.com/album/spread-your-evil-wings-and-fly
First came out September 17, 2006... the same day my record label RykoDisc was bought by Warner Bros. which I guess makes this my MAJOR LABEL DEBUT. Ryko went belly up not too long after, and the rights have finally reverted to me. (Actually they reverted to me a few years ago, but I didn’t notice until recently... I had to dig up the old contract to be sure.)
This is my only album to receive significant airplay on commercial radio, although not enough to “chart.” My song Britney’s Silver Can was named one of the 100 best songs of the year by Rolling Stone.
Produced and Engineered by Grammy winning producer Peter Katis at Tarquin Studios! Peter has been one of my best friends since college, and we’d collaborated before but this was the only time I had the budget to pay him anywhere even near what he’s actually worth.
I’m proud to make it available on Bandcamp. Today is “Bandcamp Friday”...for the past year the first Friday of each month they waive their normal fees so the artist gets the full amount of each sale. Great day to support bands you love!
Just the SST releases. Need to pick up the Swimming Ground promo single and maybe the tapes too. Oh, some of those CDs are the Rykodisc reissues.

Ministry “The Nature Of Love” 12″ (1985)
If you jumped into Ministry from The Land Of Rape And Honey forward (1988) and only need that fiery death and destruction sound, then you’d agree with Al Jourgensen as to how head-shakingly atrocious he thought his With Sympathy days were. Soda commercials, talk show appearances, and a whole album of love songs because his former label Arista asked for them. I do like With Sympathy (1983) because I lived through the new-wave / synthpop days and appreciate them. With “The Nature Of Love”, that I can see why he’s distanced himself. With heavy orchestration and synth bands, it sounds more like a horror soundtrack score and the lyrics match it to a tee. “Love is like a razor blade / double edge and double pain ... when I rip your flesh and the pain is fresh ... it's a nightmare ... love is like a butcher knife ... double sharp for single lives”. Is this a broken-heart Valentine’s Day or Halloween? Oh, wait...he wrote a song about that one. Jourgensen got the skin-shaking sound he wanted to describe a harrowing love life: his former girlfriend Aimee Mann of ‘Til Tuesday wrote songs about him (1985′s ”No More Crying”, anyone?), and former wife Patty Jourgensen does guest vocals here and they later divorced. It’s awkward not only due to his situation but in which he was the sad synthpop darling he didn’t want to be. Even more awkward is the “Cruelty mix” flip-side which is dance-club cheesy. For the two times I encountered this at West Babylon’s Looney Tunes and Riverhead’s Sunday Records, I’m happy to have avoided the same bullet twice.
Formerly a stand-alone single, it’s made the Ministry compilation circuit: Wax Trax / TVT’s Twelve Inch Singles (1987), Rykodisc’s Early Trax (2004), and Cleopatra’s Trax! Box (2015).
