I was recording my favorite song and I was sitting down at the booth and I was playing the guitar and I played along with the band. And it's quite an emotional song. After two takes of the song, the producer just came into our ears and said, 'Okay, we need to go and take a break now. Everyone's getting a bit emotional.' So we all walked outside and nobody spoke a sentence for twenty minutes. It was very emotional. Everyone was taken aback by what had just happened. I think that was quite a poignant moment in the making of the album because I was waiting for an emotional wrecking ball to come in like that and I think it did.

One of the sounds I liked the most — and which I think really made the song — was on “Sing For Absolution,” on Absolution. We got loads of guitar strings and laid them across the piano strings so every time I’d hold the sustain pedal down and play, we’d get this really nice rattle in the upper harmonics of the piano.

We also ran the acoustic piano through a wah-wah pedal and an octave divider guitar pedal. That song was all about treating the piano. In fact, on “Sunburn” on the first album, we recorded the piano with a throat microphone from a military tank. We strapped them around the bottom of the piano to get a very milky, mysterious sound. I used an ARP that we got from Rick Rubin for a few things here or there as well.

I’d never thought about [recording on my own] until I went to the vocals for a whole song and I was like ‘Jesus!’. I did find my best vocals came out in the first couple of takes. A lot of what was used on the record was from either take one or two. The more you sing it the more tired your voice gets and you overthink stuff. I wanted the album to be organic. For this record I could pick the producer, record with a full live band in a studio and go through every drum sound and guitar sound in detail. It was great. In a weird way it felt that’s how an album should be made. That was the best part of the whole thing for me.
