On Spirals and Other Visual Crutches
●○Before reading: These words describe a mechanism. They do not activate it. That part—unfortunately—is already yours

There seems to be a quiet devotion to spirals.
I don’t share it.
Not because they’re harmful.
Because they’re irrelevant.
A spiral does not hypnotize anyone.
A rotating image achieves nothing that a well-placed sentence cannot do better.
People obsess over the accessory and neglect the structure.
“Add a spiral—it looks hypnotic.”
No.
Add a phrase they can’t ignore. A pause at the right moment. A suggestion that feels pre-existing.
The spiral is not a tool.
It is a substitute.
Training wheels for those who haven’t learned balance.
Use it, if you like.
Just don’t be surprised when the subject gets dizzy—
and leaves.
