Charming.

Typing slowly is not trance. It is poor motor coordination.

Yes—trance can produce it. So can fatigue. Boredom. Or holding coffee in the other hand.

Using it as a marker is like testing fever with your finger in lukewarm water.

Unreliable. Comforting. Meaningless.

Trance is not measured by how clumsy you become.

It is measured by what you do without noticing you’ve done it.

If you need to disable autocorrect to convince yourself—

the issue is not lack of signals.

It is the need to manufacture them.

I am not saying hypnosis is simply a casual conversation.

Attention, imagination, expectation, and subjective experience all play real roles.

What I am saying is that none of these phenomena need to become magic or mind control.

The absence of a mind-control button does not mean that powerful forms of influence do not exist.

The Mind Is Not a Safe

People imagine the mind as a safe.

Find the right combination, and it opens.

I regret to inform you that the human brain is much closer to a room full of cats with conflicting opinions.

The cats fight over territory, hunger, stress, attention, and reasons that probably only they understand.

And then I watch my students argue about one person's induction versus another person's induction, repeating techniques without understanding the underlying structure.

Thinking we fully understand the human mind is a rather ambitious claim.

Almost as ambitious as understanding the meaning of life.

The earliest attempts to explain hypnotic phenomena were filled with interpretations that now seem strange to us.

When an explanation fails, humans often fall into the same temptation:

inventing a hidden agent behind the curtain.

It is easier to believe in a boogeyman with a swinging pocket watch than to accept that our own wills are constantly being shaped by ordinary forces—advertising, social pressure, environment, and relationships—that require no hypnosis at all.

The Puppet Button Fallacy

This brings us to another related myth:

"I press a button and turn someone into a puppet."

The fantasy of the puppet is attractive because it is simple.

One button.

One command.

One response.

Do you really think that if it worked like that, we would still be debating it?

The problem is that human beings are not machines waiting for the correct instruction.

A person can be influenced through persuasion, pressure, learning, expectations, and context.

Not sure what I mean?

Good.

Let's make it simple.

Persuasion: "You give me reasons to change."

Pressure: "The cost of not changing affects my decision."

Conditioning: "An experience modifies future responses."

Contextual manipulation: "The environment changes the options I perceive."

And no, these are not separate buttons.

With humans, everything mixes together.

Congratulations.

We have arrived at the territory of social psychology.

A territory humans have inhabited forever, and researchers have spent decades trying to understand.

Now, this project did something very interesting.

MK-Ultra heavily reinforced the image:

"There is someone behind the curtain who knows how to manipulate the mind."

Of course, all hypnotists are obviously dark figures with questionable intentions, hypnotizing people randomly and turning them into mindless slaves.

Naturally.

All hypnotists gather in a secret room lit by candles to decide who will lose their keys this week.

We also have a committee dedicated to deciding who will forget where they left their phone.

And we don't do it for fun.

No.

The reason is much darker.

Much more terrible.

We have...

administrative paperwork.

Allow me to tell you something:

If there were a reproducible technique capable of erasing human will, we probably would not be arguing about tutorials online.

We would be living in a completely different world.

My dear friends,

some with their minds,

some without them,

I will tell you a truth:

People prefer imagining a secret technique over accepting how complex it is to influence another human being.

The Myth That Survived the Experiment

There is a phrase that gets repeated a lot:

"Through hypnosis, you can control someone's mind."

Sweet summer child, do you really think that if it were that easy, people would still have free will?

Allow me to tell you a story, since I am feeling generous.

Back in the 1950s, for reasons that do not particularly concern us as hypnotists or subjects, the government decided that manipulating and breaking human minds was an excellent idea.

Project MK-Ultra was a massive, secretive, and abusive program involving experimentation with drugs, interrogations, psychological manipulation, and related techniques.

The goal was to weaken targets, force confessions from spies and traitors, and achieve some form of mind control through psychological torture.

The thing is, the myth of mind control survived far better than the actual results of the program.

Do you really think that if hypnosis were truly a weapon, it would be freely available to the public?

I — “Instant” Speed is impressive. Not necessarily deeper.

J — “Just relax” Relaxation is one path. Not the only one.

L — “Letting go” Easier said… when trust is already there.

M — Mind control A fantasy wearing technical language.

N — “No resistance” Sometimes, people just don’t care enough to resist.

O — Overpowering Influence is rarely brute force. It’s alignment.

P — Power Often mutual, even when it doesn’t look like it.

Q — “Quiet mind” Thoughts don’t disappear. They become less relevant.

R — Resistance A mismatch. Not a battle.

S — Surrender Not submission—participation reframed.

T — Triggers Not magic words. Learned associations.

U — Unconscious Not a place. A process.

V — Voice A tool. Not the source.

W — “Waking someone” They were never fully gone.

X — X-factor Real… but rarely understood.

You become predictable enough that searching for an exit feels… unnecessary.

That is not trust.

Trust implies a gap. A moment where someone decides to believe despite uncertainty.

I don’t work with gaps.

People think they trust me.

They don’t.

They trust the absence of reasons not to.

And by the time a reason appears—

it no longer feels like one.

So no.

Don’t trust me.

Trust is for equals.

And, inevitably:

“This is going to do numbers in the hypnosis community.”

It will.

Because the community has a complicated relationship with consent.

Not out of malice.

Out of preference.

The fantasy of losing control without warning is far more appealing than the responsibility of negotiating it.

The app does not hypnotize anyone.

The user does.

The app is simply the delivery system.

A convenient alibi.

The problem is not the technology.

It is the assumption that confusion is pleasure.

That not knowing what happened is part of the experience—

instead of a failure of it.

But that conversation is inconvenient.

And inconvenient things rarely perform well.

So the numbers will rise.

And the question will remain—

“Add a spiral—it looks hypnotic.”

No.

Add a phrase they can’t ignore. A pause at the right moment. A suggestion that feels pre-existing.

The spiral is not a tool.

Training wheels for those who haven’t learned balance.

Use it, if you like.

Some might call me a monster for stating this plainly.

And yet—

others promise transformation in seven days. Freedom from your past. Relief on demand. A rewritten self, neatly packaged.

Tell me— which of us is more dangerous?

The one who names the mechanism?

Or the one who hides it behind hope?

People cling to the word “ethics” as if it were a constant.

A fixed point. A guarantee.

As if the mind were not a shifting landscape— full of currents, gradients, fractures.

As if people themselves did not change from moment to moment.

But perhaps that’s the real function of the word.

Not to define behavior.
