recently read The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw(well, listened to it, performance by Janina Edwards and oh my god it was so good, literally made the book come to life)

it was so amazing!!! (once i realized it was a collection of short stories rather than a continuous story, got real confused on chapter two haha)

Philyaw is a phenomenal writer with a very strong voice, and each story was so GOOD. The way she wrote each girls desire and their constraint, and the different ways they gave into them, each of their relationships with church and faith, how critical they were, it was very gratifying as someone who grew up in the church myself.

Throughout the whole book, each story clearly features themes of colorism, shame, family dysfunction(heavy on the mommy issues), religious trauma and community, and a dose of beautifully written erotica.

My personally favorite stories were Jael, Peach Cobbler, and How To Make Love To a Physicist.

Jael was just a great character, and i love stories that feature characters that are just unabashedly kinda weird. it’s wonderful and the switching of the grandma’s narration mixed with Jael’s diary entries were so good.

Peach Cobbler was where my jaw dropped the most because why tf was she fucking that priest in front of her daughter 😭😭 i mean i know why but DAMN. It was so messy. I also just really had my heart break for Olivia, eating the cobbler out of the trash and wanting to please her mom so badly. Really if you have mommy issues, this set of stories will break your heart.

How To Make Love To A Physicist was just so tender, so sweet. I loved the MC’s voice and her struggle with her body issues and insecurity actually affecting her daily and romantic life was great to see, and the ending was just 💗💗💗

A seriously wonderful set of stories and i fully recommend if you have a spare four hours to listen!
