Preference {6} Au: He's Your Overprotective Brother Meeting Your Boyfriend for the First Time (Part 2: His POV)
Hello, Lovelies! By popular demand, I did a part 2 to the request AU where one direction are your overprotective brothers, and they're meeting your boyfriend for the first time. I hope you enjoy it! I am still taking requests, so please don't hesitate to ask.
"Harry, my boyfriend isn't like you, okay? He doesn't go around, sleeping with every girl he deems fit!"
My sister's words wounded me, but the real sting came from the slamming of her bedroom door. At that point, in the silence, I realized that I had taken it too far.
B/F/N, who sat across from me, looked around the table before pushing his chair back, "I better go..."
I knew it. I looked up at him and glared at his retreating form, knowing he was just as much of a jerk as I had predicted he was. He was selfish and only here for a lay.
Little did I know that I would be eating those words when he turned to go upstairs, not out the front door. He was going after my sister...Maybe he wasn't as bad as I originally thought. No guy would put in this much effort for a one night stand.
"I think we should go talk to her, too," my mother said, looking over at my father.
He let out a sigh, pushing his chair back, "I think we should, too."
"No," I put up my hand after getting out of my seat, "I'll go talk to her. I'm the one who caused this mess...It's time I clean it up."
I felt my parents' eyes on me as I walked upstairs, wondering what to say and do. I wanted to comfort her, and I wanted to apologize for my obscene behavior. I just didn't know how.
"He obviously cares about you, Y/N," I heard B/F/N from the top of the stairs.
"I know he does, but he takes it too far sometimes," my sister sniffled.
"Well...yeah, but I probably will do the same for my sisters," he replied. "We can't help it...As brothers, we've been your guy all your life, and now that we see our sister has a new guy..."
There was a bit of silence before I heard my sister whimper.
"Oh, Love. Don't cry," B/F/N whispered, followed by the rustling of fabric. "He means well."
"But doesn't he understand how happy you make me?" she cried. "Doesn't he want me to be happy?"
"I'm sure he does, but he just hasn't seen how happy we make each other."
I thought this was as good a time as any to walk into her room. I lightly tapped on the open door, letting them know I was there. He had been holding her, sitting on the edge of her bed, but when they saw me, they immediately separated.
"I, um," I rubbed the back of my neck, trying to find the right words. Admitting I was wrong wasn't easy, "I want to talk with you two...about this whole thing."
Y/N looked up at me, and I saw just how badly I had hurt her. Her eyes were red and puffy from her tears, "I'm sorry, Harry. I shouldn't have said some of the things I said."
She was apologizing to me?
I shook my head, "I deserved it. I was being a total arse, and the things you said were true. I just...didn't think you knew...and it's mostly for that reason I'm so protective, Y/N. So many guys out there are like me, sleeping around and breaking hearts. I did that in high school, but I'm not like that anymore."
She nodded, looking down at her lap.
"Y/N..." I sighed, "I'm sorry. I really am," I looked over at B/F/N, who shifted uncomfortably. "I'm also sorry about the way I treated you, B/F/N. I was too quick to judge, and I didn't even give you two a chance to show me how amazing you two are together."
Her boyfriend looked shocked for a moment before he gave me a smile, "Thanks, Harry, and I don't blame you. Y/N's too precious to be left unprotected..."
I nodded, "And that's why I'm willing to share the job."
I was looking at B/F/N, so I wasn't ready when I felt Y/N wrap her arms around me, causing me to stumble back.
"Thank you, Harry," she whispered, squeezing me tightly. "I love you so much."
All I could do was smile and hug her back because she had taken the words right out of my mouth.
I knew I had crossed the line when Y/N started yelling at me, but I was too damn stubborn to admit it. Now, she was probably off crying somewhere.
I spun around to look at B/F/N, who was getting up, "I'll go talk to her."
"No," I said, getting up from my seat beside him. "I know where she went, and I was the one who caused all this. I'll talk to her."
I had to hand it to B/F/N; he was fearless when it came to Y/N. After all I had done to him tonight, he was still willing to stand up to me if it meant he could be with Y/N.
"It's okay," I smiled at him slightly. "I'll be back with her even if she never forgives me."
With that, I left the room and walked towards the back of the house. Sure enough, I could see the lights spilling onto the grass in our backyard. Y/N was in our childhood tree house, where she always went when she was upset or lonely.
I climbed the rope ladder and lifted up the hatch slightly to peek inside.
Y/N was in there, leaning against an old crate we used to use for her tea parties. Her face was buried in her arms, but by the way her shoulder shook, I could tell she was crying. Her big brother, who was supposed to wipe away the tears, had actually caused them this time.
"Y/N?" I pulled myself up into the tiny room, ducking my head.
Her shoulders stopped moving, and she got up, looking up at me while wiping away the tears, "What, Liam?"
"I'm sorry," I sighed, hanging my head in shame. "I was acting horrible towards your boyfriend, and it wasn't right of me."
"It really wasn't, Liam. He hasn't done anything to upset me, and he came in peace," she whispered the truth.
"I know, but...you're so young, Y/N," I said, looking up at her. "You're only fourteen, and you're already this close?"
"I know that the feelings seem a bit mature...but we aren't rushing it at all," she assured me. "He hasn't pressured me into anything. We haven't had our first kiss yet..."
I put my hand up to stop her, "I'm happy you two are going slow, but I'm just not comfortable with this. B/F/N seems like an okay kid, but I need some time to get used to this and to him. Do you understand?"
She nodded and outstretched her arms, "Hug?"
I chuckled, crawling over to her and pulling her into my arms.
"You know you look breathtakingly beautiful, Y/N," I whispered. "I really shouldn't have been surprised when you announced you had a boyfriend."
She smiled shyly at my compliment, "Thanks, Liam."
We silently sat there for a moment before she spoke up, "Liam?"
"I promise I won't keep any more secrets about my relationship with B/F/N."
That promise made me feel so much better about the situation. I know I had my first girlfriend at thirteen, but...I was pretty stupid, honestly. I didn't know how to treat her. We just held hands and called each other "girlfriend" and "boyfriend." It really wasn't much of a relationship, but she had been my first kiss, a crappy one at that. I didn't want that for Y/N, and maybe if I knew what was going on, I could help her because boys her age were practically clueless.
"Thanks, Y/N. I just want you to know that the only reason I'm so protective is because I don't want you to make the same mistakes I did."
"I know, Liam," she said, leaning up to kiss my cheek. "We should get back now."
I smiled at her and let her go, "Yeah. I have to give another apology."
"You'll apologize to B/F/N?" her eyes sparkled as she asked this, as if the apology would make her world.
I let out a sigh, getting to my feet, "Yeah...even though I don't want to..."
"I'm joking," I laughed, following behind her towards the hatch.
"You better be!" she shouted back as she climbed down.
"Of course, Love. Anything for your happiness."
Because I would do anything for that.
Was I going to the fucking ladies' room?
Yes, especially if B/F/N had the balls to go in there and comfort her himself. I may be a drunk arse, I may hate her boyfriend's guts, but I just hurt my little sister even though I thought I was helping her.
After B/F/N left the room, going after her, I turned to my mum and dad, "I really screwed up this time, didn't I?"
"Well...we didn't even get to talk to him and see what kind of person he is..." my mum sighed with a pitiful smile.
"You didn't even give anyone else a chance to give him a chance," my dad scowled at me, playing with his fork.
I sighed, throwing my napkin down on the table while getting up.
"Where are you going?" my mum asked, watching me walk stumble around the table.
"To the ladies' room," I replied before nearly falling over.
"Son, you're drunk," my dad said getting up to grab my arm. "Do you really think you should be talking to her right now?"
"But she's my sister, and I'm..." I felt a wave of dizziness hit me, making me take a step back.
"You're nearly going to pass out, Louis," my dad shook his head. "You can't talk to your sister like this. B/F/N will calm her down, and then we'll leave."
"But I-I should be the one calming her down."
"Louis..." my dad sighed, pushing me back down into a chair before sitting next to me. "You're jealous of your sister's boyfriend."
I was not! Why would I be jealous of him? I'm her older brother. I have had her with me for most of my life, and just because he waltzes in and starts occupying her time, I'm suddenly deemed as jealous?
"Face it, Y/N was yours for most of your life," my mum whispered.
"But that doesn't mean I--"
"Now that B/F/N is in the picture, she's going to be spending more time with him," my dad pointed out, leaning back in his chair.
My parents looked at each other before sighing.
"This is why you can't talk to your sister now," my mum said while my dad flagged down a waiter. "Wait until you are sober and have had time to think this through."
"B/F/N said he will take care of it, Sir," the waiter said when my dad asked for the bill.
"Oh, well, he doesn't have to do that," my dad was chuckling and taking out his wallet from his pant pocket. "At least let me cover the tip."
"No, Sir," the waiter shook his head. "B/F/N already paid it."
I didn't see Y/N for the rest of the day. We had left the restaurant before B/F/N and Y/N returned to the table. My parents dragged me home, and I spent the rest of the day sleeping. I woke the next morning with a massive hangover, but I had done quite a bit of thinking.
I had come to the conclusion that I was jealous of B/F/N, and in my jealousy, I had become overprotective of Y/N. I barely see her as it is, with university and my job, so when I'm home, I kind of want her all to myself. Now I had to share, and I knew there was no way around it.
I got out of bed the next morning, pulled on my sweatpants, and walked down the hall to her room. The door was closed and locked, and I hoped I wasn't ruining my apology if I woke her up.
"Yes?" she answered after two knocks.
"Y/N? It's me, Louis," I replied, running my fingers through my messy hair.
It was silent, but eventually the door opened to reveal her sleepy face.
"Did I wake you?" I asked with a frown.
"No..." she yawned. "I've been half asleep for an hour now."
"Oh...Well, um...I just wanted to say that I'm sorry about how I acted yesterday," I whispered, looking at the ground. "It was uncalled for."
"I already forgave you, Louis, but I would like to talk."
And that's what we spent the whole morning doing. Talking, joking, and laughing. Just like we used to.
The first person I looked to was B/F/N, trying to place all the blame on him, but a tiny voice in my head told me that this was all my fault.
B/F/N met my gaze, glaring at me for a moment before getting up and walking towards the door. As he did, he whispered, "You're right, Niall. Boys really are heartbreakers."
His words cut me like a knife because I knew who he was talking about, and he was right.
I heard the front door slam, and I sighed, "Well, I'm an arsehole."
My parents didn't say a word, at first. My mum got up, grabbing the dirty cake plates and walking towards the kitchen, leaving my dad to handle this.
"Niall, we know you're protective of your sister, but she isn't a little girl anymore," he said, walking towards the window to peer outside. "She's seventeen, now, almost an adult. It's time she makes her own decisions."
"And if she makes mistakes?" I asked, leaning forward.
"She learns from them," he replied, looking back to the window. "Come here."
I did as he told me, getting up off the couch and joining him at the window. I looked outside to see Y/N and B/F/N sitting on the front steps, talking. I couldn't tell if she was crying or not until she brought her fingers to her cheek, brushing the skin there.
A few minutes later, she was throwing herself into his arms, letting him hold her. He rubbed her back, rocking back and forth before pressing a kiss to her cheek.
"I better talk to her..." I whispered, looking at my dad.
"Yeah, you should," he nodded before walking away. "I suggest you do it after he leaves, though. You don't want to go out there and separate them. It'll make you look worse."
As much as I didn't want to take his advice, I did. I sat back down on the couch and just flipped through the channels until I heard a car door slam and an engine roaring to life.
I found myself by the window again. Y/N was on the driver's side of the car, and she was pulling away from him. I knew they had kissed. I felt the anger in my stomach, but I suppressed it. I didn't like him, but he obviously made Y/N happy. For that reason alone, I would tolerate him.
Y/N was back in the house minutes later, and knowing how bad it would be if she caught me at the window, I had moved back to the couch.
She paused on the stairs, snapping at me, "What?"
"Can we...um...talk?" I bit my bottom lip as I asked because she still sounded like she was really furious with me.
"...Fine," she answered before entering the room and taking a seat on the armchair across from me. "Talk."
"Alright," I turned off the telly and leaned forward, resting my elbows on my knees. "I'll admit that I was way out of line tonight, and I had no right to treat your boyfriend that way. I didn't even give him a chance or try to get to know him. I'm a bastard, and I know it. I'm sorry, Y/N. For everything."
She stared at me for a moment, "I just don't understand why you behaved in such a way, Niall. You're twenty years old."
"I know. I know," I sighed, hanging my head. "But I'm just worried about you. I don't want you to make the same mistakes I did..."
"That's what B/F/N told me."
"What?" I looked up at her, slightly confused.
"I asked B/F/N why you were acting like such a jerk, and he said that you were just worried about me."
So he was defending me? Now I really feel like a cunt.
"Well, I'm sorry, and I'm willing to try this again sometime..."
Y/N was about to open her mouth, but I cut her off.
"When both of you are ready to meet with me, I promise you that I will keep an open mind and actually try to get to know him this time," I gave her a soft smile that she returned.
"Thank you, Niall," she said, pulling me into a tight hug.
Y/N's boyfriend had some nerve, considering all I had done to intimidate him.
The minute Y/N disappeared from sight, he was getting up from the couch to go after her. I put my hand out to stop him, though.
"What's your problem?" I asked, smirking a little at his bravery.
"Well, my girlfriend just walked out of the room, crying," he snapped back. "I have every right to consider that a problem."
I was taken aback by his words and sudden courage.
He looked at me like I had two heads, "Why what?"
"Why's it a problem for you?" I asked, wondering if my sister's wellbeing really meant this much to him.
"Well, I care for her. Seeing her cry kills me because when she's with me she should be happy. That's my job, to make her happy, even when I'm not around," he replied. "If she's upstairs crying right now, I'm not doing my job, and I love my job."
This kid was weird. When I was his age, all I cared about were my dad's Victoria Secret magazines and being cool. This bloke was different, though, and I might have been wrong about him.
I felt Liam's hand on my shoulder and nodded, "Yeah, I know."
"Listen, B/F/N," I said, running my fingers through my hair. "I'll apologize to you before I go and make things right. My judgment of you was wrong, and I'm sorry for the way I treated you."
"It's okay," he whispered, sitting down on the other sofa that faced the kitchen.
"I'm going to let you do your job, but I've got to do mine first," I got up from the coffee table and made my way upstairs.
I walked down the hall to Y/N's room and knocked lightly on her door.
"What?" she sniffled, but I could tell she was still furious.
"It's me, Y/N," I whispered against the white wood. "Please open up."
"What do you want, Zayn?"
I could hear the tears in her angered voice.
"I just want you to open up so we can talk."
"I don't want to talk to you!"
"But...Y/N, I really need to talk to you. I understand you're livid with me, but I really want to make this right..."
I heard a click, and she whispered, "It's open."
I turned the knob and walked into her room, seeing her in the middle of it with her puffy, red eyes.
"Y/N..." I pulled her into a hug. "I'm so sorry...I misjudged him, you, and your relationship, and here, I thought I was the one who cared about you most. I'm the one who made you cry..."
She buried her face into my chest, sniffling, "Is he gone?"
"He's downstairs," I sighed, realizing how much he meant to her. "I stopped him from coming up here because this whole thing had my name written on it."
"Niall and Liam aren't being mean to him, are they?"
"No. They had nothing to do with this. They just sat there to intimidate him. I asked them to, so don't blame them for anything," I whispered, rubbing her back.
"What did you say to him before?" she asked, looking up at me.
"I was basically threatening him," I mumbled, looking away.
"Ow!" I pulled back, holding the spot where she had slapped me. "I'm trying to make peace here!"
"Why did you threaten him?" her temper was back.
"Because I didn't want him to hurt you. I love you, Y/N. You're my baby sister, and the last thing I ever want for you is to experience heartbreak," I answered her truthfully.
"But, Zayn, heartbreak is a part of life. I need to experience it. I can't be babied by you for the rest of my days."
And that's when I realized my reasoning was ridiculous. She was right. She needed to make her own mistakes, cry a little, move on, and grow up. If I spoiled her like this, I would be holding her back.
I nodded my head, "I'm sorry, Y/N. Can you forgive me?"
"Are you stupid?" she smiled, coming over to me and pulling me into a hug. "I'll always forgive you."
