In his hands, Lore tossed around a pebble. There were a couple on the ground, but if he were to stock up on them, that meant shoving them into his pocket. That would be rather cumbersome, so he’ll suffice with the next best of being ready to throw at any danger. He had been running from something, and he didn’t know what. He also didn’t want to find what it was. He kicked one of the stones on the ground. He could’ve been hiding, but it didn’t mean he was safe from whatever it was. There really wasn’t anywhere he could hide in or felt relatively safe. Maybe it was an illusion. Maybe it was just the book making fun of him.
It wasn’t something he would rule out. Better safe than sorry was how the saying went. His heart was pounding against his chest.
From the corner of his vision, he saw something move. Did he miss something crucial? Did he not pay attention in the first place? Was that thing that quick? On account of the adrenaline, he grounded his feet, ready to launch the pebble. Squinting his eyes, he couldn’t be sure it was the same thing he had been fleeing from. He glanced at the pebble in his hands, then lowered it slightly.
He bit his lips before taking a huge breath. “Who’s there?”
