The individual is the collective

Change is up to us.

Government. Homeless. Veterans. Refugees. Prisoners. Students. Republicans. Democrats. Big Pharma. etc. etc. etc.  

I get the feeling that our nation has been sullied by a feeling of resentment, a fear of being taken advantage of or getting an unfair deal. Our distrust leads to isolation; we keep our feelings and innermost thoughts to ourselves and we feel too small to change the system. 

Simultaneously, we’ve become dependent on the system. Just a century ago most people had a modicum of self-sufficiency; they could find or grow food, cook, make their own clothing from common items like grain sacks.

Yet, I think the thing we forget is that there is no such thing as the system. There are simply individuals. Individuals have the right to make a choice, to make a change. Although you may see an illusion that says there is no choice, you choose to comply with the system or to work together to create a new one. It is up to us.

Not sure where to start? Too afraid to make a change? Begin with asking yourself why you do what you do. Do not stop with “because that was what I was taught” or “that’s the way it has always been done.” Ask yourself if you are happy with that behavior or motivation, is it good/right, does it align with your values, does it build community/our nation, and don’t stop until you are satisfied with the answer. 

We can do this.

We found each other in the service of humanity. I’m very glad to meet Abdirahman OJ who hopes to be the mayor of Tukwila in the near future.
