Kaneki - a vengeful red right hand?
I noticed that the new joker card for Kaneki gives him a right hand (which if you recall was cut off in chapter 51)
notably though, this hand is red.
Now a red right hand is most likely a reference to John Milton’s 1674 poem Paradise Lost. Keeping with the recent biblical allusions we’ve been receiving from Eto, Paradise Lost is about the Fall of Man, which Eto touched upon to Kanae. I cannot boast any keen knowledge about the poem, or even about the Bible. I can however, explain the Red Right Hand.
The Red Hand is described by the demon Belial as the vengeful right hand of God, striking down at the devils should they push the war in Heaven too far. This is the quote for the line:
“Chained in the burning lake? That sure was worse What if the breath that kindled those grim fires Awaked, should blow them into sevenfold rage And plunge us into flames; or from above Should intermitted vengeance arm again His red right hand to plague us?”
Does this mean Kaneki is taking the place of god? The one Eto sees as “A kid with an absurd amount of power”?
This description might possibly be twisted to refer to Kaneki.
I’m not here to provide any definitive answers, I just found this interesting reference, and I’m sure there are more knowledgable and eloquent people who can spot things beyond my sights.
