WHY (One Week Project)
Concepts Of Visual Language - Year 2 - Unit 3
(5 March 2020)
Before focussing completely one the last project we were given a one week project to experiment. We have to ask us ‘WHY’, choose a question and the creatively answer the question.
Some of my initial question ideas:
Why do we ask questions?
Why can I never think of a question when I should?
Why do we dream?
Why are some people extroverted and some introverted?
Why do some colours have similar names in some countries?
Why does jealousy exist?
Why do people get fascinated?
Passenger Evaluation
Passenger - Year 2
Similar to the NHS brief, this one was a challenge and a new experience. I definitely appreciate that it was a collaboration with another course but people from the same year (in our group at least). When we got the brief I was a bit like, uh okay. That is hmmm. Interesting.... Because designing a stand is something I had never really considered before, also because I usually really don’t like trade shows and stuff like that. But it turned out to be rather fun.
On the first day we talked about the brief and what initial ideas we had in mind. We then went off, did individual research and looked for inspiration and then shared our findings the next day. Jasmine, our interior student created a nice mood board and visualised our ideas in sketch up.
A difficulty we had was that our group was quite big and it felt like there was less to do for us viscom students and more for the interior architecture students which didn’t make sense considering it was one interior student and 5 viscom students in my group. At times some of us felt really useless as there wasn’t enough for each individual to work on. Also, on two days we had to work on our own as our interior student was off ill which made it a lot more difficult. She still worked from home which was really helpful but just communicating everything turned out to be somewhat difficult.
Our final outcome differed from the others, it definitely stood out. There were some things that needed more consideration but we did not have the technical knowledge and would have had to do some proper research into each material and sizes and stuff. I really like our concept though!
NHS Evalutation
NHS - Year 2
This project was definitely a new experience but also a massive challenge for me. Working together with the third years was interesting but it also made me feel quite anxious as we were basically thrown into groups with people we never met before and also, these people already had more experience than us. I know, this is nothing different from what it will be like in the industry but it was somewhat frightening. Additional to that the topic (Sexual Health) was something I didn’t really feel drawn to or confident about. So talking about that topic with people I have just met was really weird.
My group came together after the briefing to do some initial mind-mapping and thinking. We did some individual research. The others came up with the idea of drinks, cocktails specifically, which was not ideal for me as I don’t know much about that but since I couldn’t come up with a better idea that everyone would like I decided to go for it and just do my best to contribute. Our cocktail menu idea was settled quite quickly. We then split the work. I did some poster designs, inspired by cocktail posters/ads but then Hannah also did one and hers fit in with NHS a lot better than mine so we chose her design. I then got to do some type detailing on Dales Menu which was then again changed by Hannah. I kind of felt like my skills where nowhere near theirs so I was really unsure of what to do. I then decided to do some social media mock-ups with the material we had as that didn’t need any new designs but just the already designed ones.
As a group I feel like we have worked okay. We could have met up more but instead we met up to make major decisions and then went off on our own to work individually and then shared that with the group. It was somewhat intimidating and at some points I felt like there was nothing I could do that would live up to what the others expected. Anyway, I am quite pleased with our final outcome.
