Let's Talk Plastics
Why This Matters
I'll be rowing through the largest trash gyre in the world - North Pacific Ocean Gyre. Think about an ocean area the size of Texas over one mile deep composed of swirling garbage. Much of it is made up of microscopic plastics, which is then consumed by the smallest creatures that the larger fish eat, that we then overfish and consume. Voila! The food chain.
It's relevant to all of us because it's what the seafood we eat is eating. Its becoming an unnatural mainstay of our natural food chain. Mmm.... salmon with the essence of 7-11 bag, sounds delicious. Ew.
Plastics are am endemic reason that animals are dying worldwide. It's in the carcasses of ocean animals found, it's in the stomachs and around the necks of live animals.
Check out these stats taken from One World One Ocean
In fact, within the last year, the estimate for how many sharks are killed for their fins increased from 26 - 73 million (as if that wasn’t enough) to 63 - 273 million annually.
