It didn't make you happy; nor did it make you sad. Catching the bouquet of flowers was just a coincidence, right? It really didn't seem to be. That moment was not the first time you considered marriage with Jinki.
The thought didn't scare you or anything. It was just something you didn't really want. Although you and Onew had been dating for a few years, the next step didn't seem like marriage. Hell, you loved him. And there was no doubt he loved you. But getting married seemed like something way too big at th moment...
People all around you clapped, most of them were the jealous women around you. You heard a voice over the small speakers saying, "The bouquet was caught by [name]~ Congratulations, sweetheart. Now go share this moment with your loved one, wherever he may be..." At that, Jinki jumped to his feet from his chair and shouted, "Oh oh~!! That's me!!!" He looked straight at you and offered a hand.
The same voice on the speaker narrated, "Ah, there Jinki is. He's offering his hand, possibly his life, to this lovely lady. Will she accept?" It seemed like one of those cheesy drama shows... But really, it was kind of cute.
Walking slowly to him, a blank look on your face, Onew met you halfway and put an arm around you while you still held the bouquet (which you caught somewhat on accident.) Jinki raised his other arm to wave at the camera people snapping shots of you two. A smile was put on your face when you saw Onew's silly grin for the cameras. You also waved shyly towards the cameras with a toothless smile.
The wedding reception became a whole lot more awkward for you after that. When the pictures ceased, Jinki kept his arm around you as he guided you back to the table to sit next to him. You knew Onew was looking at you with eyes of curiosity and wonder.
However, you forced yourself not to look at him. Instead, you stared at the bouquet of plum-purple and white flowers in your hand, caressing the petals with your fingers. They were soft and smooth, and reminded you of Jinki's skin... But nevermind that, you didn't want to look at him.
As people continued dancing and eating at the reception, the two of you sat there, speechless. Music seemed to be drowned out around you, the only noise was silence of the mood between you and Jinki. Onew took your hand that was playing with the petals and held it in both of his, cradling it as if it was the most precious jewel in history. And yeah, it just had to be that hand--your left hand.
Onew fixed his eyes on your fingers, especially your fourth one. It was smooth, but bare. No rings, no nail polish. Nothing occupied any space on your fingers except for the skin.
He looked up from your hand to your eyes, which met his at the same time. He smiled that friendly and bright smile again, and you couldn't help but do the same.
"Hey," you pout. "I was admiring the flowers with that hand."
Jinki softly chuckled and let go of your hand, but not taking his eyes off of yours.
The beauty Onew possessed was not simply his looks. His eyes, nose, skin, lips... It was all appealing, no doubt. In fact, it reminded you of a rainbow: sometimes they didn't look attractive separately; but worked well together to be a beautiful masterpiece. But what was so attractive about him was how his eyes told a story. His eyes showed compassion, understanding, love.
Your left hand, then resting on your knee, reached up to stroke Onew's cheek. He leaned his face into your palm and closed his eyes. A soft sigh left his slightly chapped lips.
"I know what you're thinking," you say, quiet and only audible to Onew.
Jinki's soft brown eyes opened to look at yours again. They unsuccessfully tried to surpress a look of sadness with one of shock. He placed a hand on top of yours, still on the side of his face. "Yeah," he admitted. "Do you ever think about it?"
You set the flowers next on the table next to you covered with white cloth and dishes. Taking both of his hands in yours, you grinned at Onew. His gaze made its way to the floor, knowing what you would say.
Instead of letting you say it, Jinki decided, "Let's talk about it when we get home, babe. I guess at Kibum's wedding is not the time, yeah?"
You didn't really mind waiting until you got home to converse about marriage. But nor did you really want to wait. The pure disappointment in Jinki's voice made you want to tell him right then and there how you felt. It was heartbreaking to think he became even the slightest bit upset because of you. But you knew the timing was bad as well. Hell, any time to say it was kind of bad. It was just one of those things nobody wants to talk about, yet needed to be addressed. So you couldn't do much but smile out of slight pity, mostly compassion, and say, "Then let's go home now."
At that, Jinki's face perked up with wide eyes. It wasn't exactly joy sprawled across his face. Rather, he looked quite surprised. Surprised that you wanted to talk about marriage. But he wasn't hesitant to go along with your suggestion. In fact, he nearly jumped from his chair to get up and leave.
After last goodbyes and congrats to the bride and groom, you and Onew left the reception. You still couldn't believe how absolutely stunning the bride's dress was though. Saying goodbye and congrats to her made you jealous again. And it was obvious to Onew. But really, it was the most beautiful wedding gown you had ever seen. Even the ones in movies and on television shows could not compare to hers. You thought, She must have paid a fortune for that. I could never... So you pushed yourself not to think about it again.
Through tears in his eyes, Jinki managed to make words, "So... this... sniffle This is what you think about marriage. What was the point in dating if you don't want to marry me? Should we just call it quits now?" You couldn't hold back your own tears much longer. It killed you to hear Onew say such things. Moreso, to even see him in such sorrow. It wasn't true; dating was not pointless, and it wasn't that you didn't want to marry him. But you didn't know how to explain it to him. It was too big of a commitment for you, and not to mention how you saw other marriages go...
With just a few more words, tears bursted from your eyes. He said, "But, I love you."
You wiped a few tears from crawling down his face. You hated it when he cried. It wasn't for him. Jinki crying should have been considered an unforgiveable sin or something. Even a frown on his face made your heart troubled. It was just that he looked so depressed and sulken from his usual warm, happy self. So to see him truly broken made your heart crush inside of your chest.
"Jinkiya..." you stroked the apple of his cheek with yoru thumb, but he turned his head away. "Jinkiya. Don't be sad. I love you too. I really do. I would spend the rest of forever with you. I just--"
"Don't want to marry me," he cut you off and sobbed.
You sighed a curt sigh, and reasoned, "It's not that I don't want to marry you. I just can't believe it's the right time. We're too young."
"Key-goon is two years younger than us! And he has already married! How can we be too young, huh?" Onew didn't really seem angry, although his voiced was at a raised volume. Surprisingly loud, actually. "How??" If he can marry at 25, why can't we marry at 27? Don't tell me we're too young, dammit! We aren't. For the past three and a half years, I've wanted nothing but to marry you. But you must not love me like I love you?"
"No!" you shouted. "I do love you Jinki. Dammit, didn't you hear me before? I love you. I fucking love you. There's nobody I'd rather be with, you hear me? If there was only one thing I could have, I would choose you over anything else. I iwouldn't choose my friends, job, not even my family. Nothing in this world--hell, in this UNIVERSE-- would I choose over you. And do you know why? Because I fucking love you, Jinki." The tears wouldn't stop seeping out of your eyes and rolling down your face. And onew's weren't any different.
"Then why?" he pleaded. "Why won't you marry me? Are couples not supposed to marry when they love? If you love me, won't you marry me?"
"Jinkiya... Gosh, Jinkiya. I love you so much. More than anything. And I want to marry you. Just.... I can't..."
It was true; you couldn't marry him. It didn't matter how much you wanted to marry him. There was just no way you could let yourself. And it was all because of your own parents. You saw their marriage, the ups and downs... Mostly downs. They claimed to have been in love. But it sure didn't look like it. And if that's what marriage did to people, you would nver let yourself marry.
But poor Jinki... He was bawling his eyes out. He was sure to be bloodshot eyes the following morning. His sadness was contagious, and left you crying even when he rose from the cough and walked into the bedroom. You stuffed your face into your hands and asked yourself how you could break his heart. You knew how fragile he was, too. And that made it all so much worse. You couldn't take it more than just a few minutes knowing what you had just done to him. So you followed him into the bedroom of the apartment to find him already curled up in a ball on the bed, facing the wall.
You crawled into the other side of the bed underneath the covers. You turned on your side and tried to put a hand on his shoulder. Rejected. Onew pulled his shoulder away enough to let you know he didn't want it.
Neither of you would sleep well that night, you knew it. For hours, you laid silent just staring at the darkness of the above ceiling. You could tell Jinki had fallen asleep by his heavy breathing and random twitches. Even the way he slept was cute... All bunched up and twitching. Absolutely adorable, in kind of a weird way though. You couldn't help but love him, even he knew it.
But what you also both knew was how much you had a disapproval or marriages in general. And it was obvious earlier that night.
His begging replayed in your head over, and over, and over.... "If you love me, won't you marry me?" And remembering the tears on his cheeks made you cry softly again.
You let out a soft and quiet sigh of disappointment, mostly disappointed in yourself. Actually, fully disappointed in yourself.
With a few more tears and a few more minutes, you cried yourself to a silent sleep... The argument replaying even in your dreams--no, nightmares.
You woke to bright lights. Rubbing your somewhat sore, and nastily bloodshot eyes, you whispered to yourself, "Damn that window..." It's not like you disliked the morning sunshine. It was just too bright and happy to be the morning after a fight like that.
To your left was a missing Jinki. You didn't awaken to a kiss on the forehead like you usually would, and it made you frown. Instead of the warm body of Onew next to you, there was a small note on which Onew scribbled, "I'm sorry for making you cry. It seems we could both use a bit of separate time right now. I'll be back in the afternoon. I love you..."
Another thing you couldn't resist admiring about Lee Jinki was his hoensty and sincerity. His thoughtfulness was unbearingly sweet. Everything was true, what he said. And you felt the exact same way: apologetic and guilty. And you also agreed that alone time would be best for a while.
You stretched your arms wide and a huge yawn came out of nowhere. After rereading the note, you had to ask yourself, "CAN I marry him?"
