One of the projects that I undertook as part of my Visiting Assistant Librarian role at SUNY Plattsburgh, was project management of a library resources block in our campus learning management software, Moodle. Well, after lots or coordination, collaboration and effort by a team of programmers, networking/systems folks and instructional designers, it’s now live! The Library Resources block in Moodle has customizable link options that provide research tools relevant to the given course’s discipline. Instructors can choose from multiple libguides and style guides to help student find and cite sources.

Apparently, it's National Distance Learning week! Huzzah?

Online learning is becoming perfunctory; the way that email seemed an optional form of communication for administrators a decade or two ago, a few years into our not-so-distant future, and whether you like it or not, you're going to have to be serving the public and patrons in a digital realm with the same depth and personalized as in-person services.

That doesn't mean the end of books, but it does mean the beginning of closer organizational collaborations, strengthened consortium agreements and the opening up of educational resources to more and more working families.

And while the in person consultation remains a best seller to our students and patrons, it is a false dichotomy to propose an opposition or tension between harnessing technology and walking up to the reference desk.
