Do Online Petitions Actually Work? What Good Do They Bring?

Over the years, I have been sent a lot of online petitions to sign and except for cases when my friends would be sitting right next to me, I have largely ignored them, believing petitions to be largely useless. Whilst writing this article, I found some inspiring stories that have slightly changed my perception of petitions, but then again, petitions alone can't do much.

Activism - is it powerful? 

I want to focus on ‘Slacktivism’ in this weeks blog post. For those who don’t know what it is, the dictionary describes it as ‘the practice of supporting a political or social cause by means such as social media or online petitions, characterized as involving very little effort or commitment’. 

So really, does activism on social media have much of an impact? 

Mostly, I don’t think online activism is super effective in making actual change, however there are the occasional cases where online activism is successful. As said by The Rinj Foundation for Women, one obvious success was the #metoo campaign. This blew up on social media and lead to bringing down at least 201 powerful men within the industry to loosing their positions which have now been replaced mostly by women.

Over a range of social networking sites, commonly you pass online petitions that you can sign to push for a cause. How much is this really doing? This is where I believe Slacktivism plays a big role. When people involve themselves in a movement by signing a petition, is there really any impact being made? I don’t think so. It’s rather lazy, people signing these petitions aren’t signing it because they genuinely care and what to see change. I believe it is more of a feel good moment that creates a stimulant in ones mind that tells them they’re doing something good for the world. If people spent more time researching campaigns and movements, they would find something that they are passionate about and ways to make an actual impact. Instead of signing online petitions, they can put their effort into contributing to one campaign that can actually make a difference. 

With the recent Vegan activist movement that halted Melbourne’s city central on Monday morning. Despite the chaos it caused, I think the chaos is what made it so effective. It got everyone talking about it, whether it would’ve been on their monday morning meetings, between your family, on social media, or between your class at Uni. Whilst it created more anger and rage, it had an impact and it got people talking. On my own facebook feed I even saw someone who said ‘I don’t believe that protesters should disrupt people going to work and going about their daily lives. However I have just seen the first 10 minutes of the doco Dominion and I’m appalled... If this is Aussie Farming I’m disgusted’. This came from someone who was initially angered by the disruption caused but since taking the time to watch the documentary her opinion has completely changed and it even taking action on her own socials against animal abuse. This ladies statues led to others contributing by commenting and sharing spreading more awareness. This particular vegan communities campaign was a pain in the ass for those involved but it proved to be succesful. 

Overall - Activism can be extremely powerful if effort is made and it’s done correctly but it can also be useless if little effort was involved. It can make a true change if enough movement and awareness is made.

Online Petitions

I don't sign them.  Don't even ask.  I don't care what the cause is, I don't care what the petition is trying to do, I refuse to sign them.  If this is an issue, unfollow me right now and let me know, so I can unfollow you.

My reasons for not signing online petitions (in no particular order):

1) No one pays attention to them.

2) They ask for far too many personal details.  Sure, I could lie... but then what the hell's the point of signing a petition?

3) That information you give?  Utterly unsecured and can be used to do everything from send you spam to hard copy junk mail to identity theft.

I work hard to protect mine and my family's privacy.  I'll be writing under a penname, after all.  You think that'd be proof enough that I value my privacy to the point where I'd not use my real name to identify myself on my life's work?

So, long story short, I will not be signing online petitions, no matter the cause.  If I support it, I'll add my voice in other ways.  A stupid petition isn't going to be one of them.  If this is a requirement, unfollow me now.
