Good Morning!☀
And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. Mark 9:22-23
Jesus had come down from the mountain with Peter, James, and John to find himself confronted by the father of a demon possessed child. The father had brought his son to the disciples to cast the demon out, but they could not. Upon seeing Jesus, the father ran to him and explained the situation, expressing doubt that Jesus would be able to help him as well with the words " If thou canst do anything".
Most would not blame the father for expressing doubt when none of the disciples that had been there had been able to cast the demon out. We could only imagine the despair he may have felt. Jesus let the father know that it was not a matter of his ability to cast the demon out, but the father's ability to believe. Hear these words again:
Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. Mark 9:23
Elsewhere in the Bible we find Jesus telling some who came to him for healing and help, when they received had what they came for, "Thy faith has made thee whole". (Matthew 9:22, Mark 5:34, 10:52, Luke 8:48,17:19)
We can also call to mind Gabriel words to Mary: "For with God nothing shall be impossible". (Luke 1:37)
There is an old hymn not often heard in these modern times whose chorus encourages us to believe:
Only believe, only believe, All things are possible, Only believe.
Only Believe!
