“Keiko, please enjoy your break in my office today.” Yeong Mi gave the young girl. soft and apologetic smile. Keiko, a sweet girl from Japan, had been working for Yeong Mi for almost six months at her flower shop. She was kind and had a gentle air about her. The plants liked her, too, despite being a witch. Of course, Yeong Mi didn’t disclose that she knew Keiko was a witch.

She had discovered the young witch on her walk to the shop months ago. It was in a small alleyway, where the diwata had witnessed the girl perform a spell in order to heal a small stray cat. Curiously, the same girl came by to her business with a resume in hand the same day and Yeong Mi had hired her on the spot. “You have good energy. Let’s get along.” had been her words. Through the months, the diwata had never revealed her true nature to the girl, but would help teach her about the value of a plant’s life, its power and benefits. Now, Keiko was fully capable of looking over the storefront when Yeong Mi had to attend her “other business”.

The woman never outright told Keiko what she did with the strangers who showed up through the backdoor. Most of the time, they would be disguised as contractors, or delivery workers. But their frequency and injuries at times were definitely something suspicious. Regardless, Yeong Mi kept Keiko separate and safe from it, paid her above the minimum wage (including paid vacation time) and a flexible schedule. Keiko remained kind and respectful and kept the job, so Yeong Mi allowed the girl to come up with her own conclusions to the strange situations.

Yeong Mi’s words were a hint to the girl that the employee lounge would be occupied by people who did not work at the shop. “Thank you for understanding.” she continued, putting up a sign in the shop’s door to indicate that they would reopen after their break. “Please help yourself to any food in the mini fridge and ah--” she turned around to face Keiko, a knowing look in her eyes, “please don’t come into the room, we are having an important business meeting.”

Then I realize that I must not have said what I thought I said,” Alice mused, looking at the other. “Or maybe I said exactly what was on my mind and then people didn’t like it. I do that a lot, too. It’s hard to tell sometimes.”

The spring washed in like the tide, advancing confidently with warmth and white sunshine one day and retreating the next. Some days, the heat was completely unbearable for the stray, choosing to hide away from the deadly sun beams and remain in the safety of cardboard box instead. Oh, but today was different. It is a breezy afternoon; dishevelled grasses soon became lush, erasing even the memory of their wintry selves. The trees budded with leaf and blossom, and the harsh sleet became soft rain. Today, Haneul found himself roaming the streets of Seoul; tail swaying high as he searched for any trace of food. Maybe someone will be kind enough to feed the stray.

The only scenario he envisioned himself with a detective was preferably straight out of a movie scene where she invites him into a back alley with coffee and donuts. But this is the harsh reality where he had no idea Eshima was a part of the police force in the first place when they first met until he did a background check on her. The justification for the background was that his undiluted and rampant paranoia of most Japanese visitors are shamans sent to exorcise him knee-jerked him into action to make sure his existence isn’t being threatened by her at least. Instead, he received the appalling news that she is a detective who lives and works as a part of the police force. Which is why he probably shouldn’t be too surprised when she does ask him to meet her urgently in a dodgy alley minus the coffee and donuts. She is under the pretense that he is some harmless university student or so he thinks.

“Do you plan on stabbing me here or is this your idea of a date? Hi!” he has to cheerily joke as a greeting to her. “I have a bunch of questions but why the fuck am I here and what the fuck is that?!” he points at a suspiciously large covered object.

She honestly didn't know what she was doing here. Well, she knew: she didn't have a chance to refuse when the groom was the son of a chief of her own boss at the police station. Basically, everyone was invited and forced to be at the wedding ceremony if they didn't want to get chewed out by their bosses the next day. So Jinkyung had put on her best suit (she didn't own any dress and the only skirt she had was the one from when she had become a cop) and she had made her way to the wedding hall, wishing she was anywhere else at this moment, even overworking herself on a case.

The couple had exchanged their vows beautifully, the parents and friends had shed some tears and now all the guests were waiting for the food to be brought to their table. Because, obviously, it wasn't a cheap buffet but fancy dishes brought to the tables by waiters and waitresses. Jinkyung was sitting with her colleagues at one table, getting up every so often to bow to the higher-ups who had come to the wedding. Truth to be told, she already was getting tired from doing what was socially demanded from her, plus she only had a coffee that morning and she was beginning to seriously starveㅡ

That was when she was introduced to her. Detective Eshima. Jinkyung bowed like she had been doing for the past half hour and introduced herself, "I'm detective Kim Jinkyung. It's nice to meet you." And for the first time that night, Jinkyung was undoubtely honest.
