OnS Analysis - Yuu. A character whose mission is based upon regret. Answering the real purpose of his journey.
Hello everyone, as promised, there will be three analysis in total, this one's a bit simple, it was made between my best friend Ange & here, this lostsoul.
Yuu at first glance is a rather charismatic character, however, this analysis will focus on something heavier.
What's his real objective in all of this? Is it saving his "father"? Is it saving "Mikaela"? Is it saving the World? Is it truthfully resurrecting everyone?+
Would it surprise you if I said it's none of the above? Well, in fact, he doesn't seek salvation, if anything, he seeks his own death. What do I mean?
Yuu is a character that has mentioned endless times he's tired of living and if he's alive is thanks to Guren and the fact that Mikaela is "existing", otherwise he'd have given up. Yuu's real interest is to die. He doesn't want to live; however, Yuu's not the type to use his own hands for that; given that putting one's life to an end is considered as a huge sin within the lore of OnS story.
The 1st proof to this is back in chapter 90 when Mikaela as a vampire, was dying. Yuu told Asuramaru to put an end on his life
Ironically, Asuramaru reminded Yuu that Mika did everything so he could live; making Yuu realize he was loved; however, once Mikaela made boom, Krul finally managed to reach Yuu. Of course, Krul, in chapter 94 was begging Yuu to flee due to the massive danger a newborn demon posed. Yet Yuu was firm on not leaving, on basically sticking there ignoring all the things Yuu said until Krul said a keyword. What was that?
When Krul said "Save him again", Yuu's tears, all that pain he had, faded; if anything, it was as if a miracle had shone upon him. But that saving isn't entirely related to a real safety net but rather, it was more focused on a journey Yuu had from the get go.
What am I trying to say? What Yuu seeks, is a proper way to die. He knows dying out by his own hands is a no good to go; he knows in order to have the right to die, he must live first; thus he made his goal to save everything, but where does this goal orignally comes?
Correct. It comes from "regret". Both from his life as the angel Mikaela & the human boy Yuuichiro Amane. As the angel Mikaela, he didn't notice the sins his father was commiting, if anything, he understood that his existance was what condemmed his father; thus he took his life; but as the human Yuu the force of his regret started in the very 1st chapter of the story. Yuu acknowledged the existance of the kids of the Hyakuya Orphanage; however, he was distant, or rather, the best word to put in, is that he built a wall against them.
Akane & Mika tried hard to make him feel welcomed. However, when Mika had the map, when they tried to escape, when the Hyakuya kids were killed by Ferid Bathory, Yuu realized he had heaven on Earth. He realized too late that he loved them just like they had loved him without anything in exchange.
That's why, once he was taken under Guren's wing; his sole purpose was revenge. Once he grew up, he was all going in a solo way to attack horsemen of the apocalypse, he wanted to slay all vampires without a plan. It was simply jumping straight towards Death.
When Guren sent him to the school & being monitored by Shinoa, he didn't try to bond, if anything, it was all one sided. Once the squad was fully made, Yuu still acted reckless. All he was driven for was to kill the vampires and that was it; however, once he found Mika was alive, he chose to bond with the squad, he chose to cooperate not out of entire goodwill but because he saw he still had a chance to make things right.
He knew Mika was a vampire and was trying to find a way to make him fully a human back again. But then again, let's recall that Mika struggled for years to control his vampire thirst; he was half human, half vampire; and with time, Mika started suffering due to the restraint fo drinking human blood.
When they reuinited again, he told Mika to become a full vampire; Mika struggled so hard to keep part of his humanity but ultimately, he became one. Mika even told Yuu it was unnatural, it was against what goes towards a right path. Yet Yuu paid no mind to Mika's words.
Moving forward, once Mikaela's second death took place & Mika became a demon, for Yuu it was instantly as "Alive"; as another "chance". Yet that "Alive" was no longer something healthy, if anything, it turned into an obsession. Furthermore, upon finding the real stakes of what it meant to resurrect Mika.
He chose Mika not because it simply meant saving Mika; but rather, because for him, that path as hellish as it may be, would lead him to either recover the past he didn't treasure or lead him to finally die without having to struggle any further.
For Yuu, he's not interested in fighting, he's a character that not once has tried to live, to experience, to let the grief flow, to let those bitter emotions flow. He's a character that chose to remain hidden beneath the bed, a character that refuses to let go, a character that chose to mute Mikaela's voice regarding Mikaela's honest feelings.
Ultimately, if the plan fails, Yuu's find with everyone dying because it means he doesn't need to ponder on finding a reason to live or struggle any further.
What do you think? Let me know!
