Happy birthday! ~
Ookura Teruko
Ok so there’s literally almost nothing ‘bout her but:
a) Her actual name was Yoshiko Mozumu (later Yoshiko Ida, I think?)
b) She was actually invited to be a part of the Seito magazine (the one u just posted about!). However, due to marrying a diplomat and being scheduled to go abroad with him, she could not join. She recommended her sister (Kazuko Mozume) instead, and their house became the headquarters for the magazine.
c) She was publishing under the name Ookura Teruko, since it her times it was unheard of a woman writing mystery novels.
d) Apparently, during her time abroad/married to whoever she married (couldn’t find info 'bout that), she might have touched and drew inspiration from Conan Doyle’s book.
e) Raicho Hiratsuka writes, that her personal life was rather miserable, but there’s no further comment 'bout that. I know she divorced her husband at some point, but again, not much about that.
f) After resigning from the Tokyo Women’s Higher Normal School (currently Ochanomizu University), she went on to study under novelist and playwright Nakamura Kichizou. She studied under Futabatei Shimei after Nakamura went to to the USA. After Futabatei’s migration to Russia, she became an apprentice of Natsume Souseki.
