DEITY JESTER WEI WUXIAN AU HYPE HYPE HYPE - Sorry about this being late, I actually had a friend over and completely forgot how long it takes me to writes these posts. (Like an hour n a half, two hours.) Lan Wangji does not touch the rotted book after tucking it away in its hiding space. It is not that he doesn't want to analyse the book more, pick apart each and every character on every single page, it is moreso that he simply has no time to look at them without the threat of being caught. There are many different projects he is being forced to work on at once, giving him barely any time to rest, let alone stay up late and study things that actually interest him. He's trapped in the library, working through pathetic orders like 'find the lies of the Lans' and 'research the failures of the Nies' as though these things are just obviously displayed throughout history, even though there is barely any, if there is any, such things to be found. A large, expansive room filled with knowledge he once loved to chase and grasp within his hands, feeling tiny and oppressive with the poison that the Wen push onto everything almost naturally. He sits there every day, posture tense and frustrated with every character written, and he does not say a word of complaint. Because that would be allowing the Wen to win, and he will never bow down to such a sickening group of individuals.
Although every day drags by without any sort of contact with anybody that he would ever want to talk to, there are a few moments of reprieve from it all. Wen Chao rarely visits the library for...obvious reasons, and when he does, it is usually to taunt him and become an obstacle to finishing his projects - however, there are very very few occasions where he actually sits down and reads in another part of the library. His father seems to force him to read a book sometimes, as though that could possibly help deal with the fact that he is just naturally a moron who takes days to finish a singular book, and he dislikes it every time that it happens. Lan Wangji knows not to complain about it though, because that means that Jin Zixuan can sneak away from Wen Chao and sit down beside him while he works, whispering about everything that's happening in the castle. Before they were both forced to leave their homes to ensure their family's safety, Lan Wangji never really interacted with Jin Zixuan outside of formal gatherings. He did not agree with the Jins' actions (namely, Jin Guangshan's actions) and so saw no reason to do more than nod his head to greet them.
Now, though? Lan Wangji barely sees any of the others who were dragged away from their homes, and he knows that he needs whatever allies he can find in this place. Jiang Wanyin is barely ever in the castle, isolated and alone in the lakes to bring in fish that they truly do not need, and Nie Mingjue is out on the training fields, ordered around and sparring until he cannot move properly anymore. Jin Zixuan, however, has to follow Wen Chao around wherever he goes while he's in the castle, including the library. He's the one that Lan Wangji sees the most (which isn't all that much), and so he is the one who feeds him information about the others. They duck down together, looking to most as two prisoners trying to struggle their way through helping each other with a task, but truly whispering what little information they can manage to get across before Wen Chao gets bored and throws the book to the side. It's easy build a form of companionship with Jin Zixuan under these harsh conditions, and Lan Wangji would even consider him a friend if this 'friendship' was not forged in such a tense environment. Perhaps, if they ever make it out of here, the friendship will be become more genuine.
So, when he hears the obnoxious voice of Wen Chao echoing through the halls, drawing ever closer to the library, he feels a fleck of hope that he will have someone to talk to once more. He is sure to keep his eyes focused down upon the scroll he is filling with the few moments in history that the Nie ever lost a battle when he hears the door open, but it becomes apparent that Wen Chao is leading someone around. Perhaps a cat, if the jingling is anything to go by. The other person is silent, which is likely for the best as the man loves the sound of his own voice, and Lan Wangji focuses down on his work so as to not draw suspicion to himself. "And this is - hey! Stupid fucking Lan, pay attention when I'm speaking to you!!" He automatically looks up, first at Wen Chao and then at the person being carted along with the rest of his entourage, only to double take at the sight of them. Instead of robes, they wear a jester's outfit, which is the source of the jingling. Instead of elaborate hairstyles befitting those who Wen Chao deigns to speak to, their black hair is tucked away, with only a few locks hanging from the hat upon their head. Most eerily, instead of a face, this person wears a mask. Porcelain. Smiling. There is nothing visible about their face, but he can feel them watching him through it.
Something bubbles up in his chest, uncomfortable and leaving him wishing to shift away, or leave the room entirely. He does not react to this discomforting feeling, nodding once as though he has been listening to anything the damned Wen has been saying - it's all rather routine, except for the introduction of this individual. Wei Ying, the new court jester, making him of higher status than Lan Wangji himself. He does not care, and shows no reaction until Wen Chao wanders further into the library instead of leaving, at which point Jin Zixuan slips away from the entourage and sits down beside him, as usual. Wei Ying does not look away, and yet doesn't point it out to Wen Chao either, merely moving to follow him deeper into the library as Wen Chao implies they have more books than the Lan. Lan Wangji finally turns back to Jin Zixuan, who nods as though he knows exactly what he's thinking. "Creepy, right? Wen Chao showed up with him and Wen Ruohan liked him too, so he stays." He soon moves off away to different topics, how Jiang Wanyin was actually coming back to the castle after months away, but Lan Wangji's mind is still caught upon Wei Ying. He's unsettling, for sure, but he's also intriguing. He wants to know more.
