Theseus, from 'Blindsight' by Peter Watts. I referenced the official art, but tried to stick to the proportions and description in the book, which include an outer carapace I've never seen anyone depict. Basically an antimatter-catalyzed RAIR which acquires its antiprotons from a giant array near the sun using quantum teleportation (not how that actually works, but an honest misunderstanding). Approaching Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS
A comet that may be bright enough to see with the unaided eye, yet only found last year, is due to make a close pass (0.47 AU) to the Earth in the coming month.
This beautiful picture taken back in may shows the comet as it passed nearby two spiral galaxies in the night sky, but the huge snow ball, likely from the Oort cloud (unlike the galaxies) had not even been seen until 2023.
The Oort cloud is a vast area of debris, mostly left over from the creation of our solar system, but also often objects picked up along the way, and is the source of most of the comet like objects we spot.
As our Sun moves around the galaxy, the stars around us also do so but on their own orbits, meaning the closest stars today, won't necessarily be so in thousands of years from now, and some stars come MUCH closer than Alpha Centauri is today, meaning they can cause Oort cloud objects to be slung out or inwards.
As these icy objects fall into the solar system, the sun begins to heat them up, leaving a beautiful tail behind them, and then sling shots them back out again. If they survive the journey, they likely now return to fall back in another day.
