The Magic of Chickens
Chickens are beautiful magical creatures. Domesticated between 5000-8000 years ago, these birds have been integrated into every culture all over the world for mundane and magical purposes alike. In my first personal post I wanted to share my little bit of magical knowledge on chickens.
Chickens are known to be cleansing creatures. Scratching at the ground clearing their path to forage for food or to borough into the ground to nest. As mundane as this action seems, the simple sweeping of the foot clears negative energies along with them. The dirt disturbed from the ground holds this magical energy transferred as the chicken goes on about its business looking for sustenance or making itself at home. Collect this dirt and sprinkle it across your door way as you say your spell or psalms/prayer to dispell/clear any jinxes known or unknown of all persons who cross the threshold. Or use in addition to road opening spells to help cleanse the road of any negativy and etc.
Not only is chicken scratch part of their housekeeping routine, chickens self groom, cleaning their feathers. Using their beak they pick and remove parasites/insects that attach themselves to make a meal of the bird. The magical cleansing use of their beak can be powdered, (when the chicken has passed of course), and added to any spells or preserved to be used as a ritual tool to remove energetic parasites or unwanted persons who seem to act as leeches in our lives.
In addition to the beak and “chicken scratch” dirt, the feathers and feet of chickens can be used as a tool in cleansing rituals, for fanning incense or the feet dried and preserved as mojos either carried for protection or hung over windows and doorways to clear and remove negative energies that pass through. The feet could also be used as a replacement for “voodoo” dolls/doll babies, etc. Decorate, charge, and baptize them to represent your target and use as needed.
And the best tool for last....the Egg!
Chicken eggs are an incredible and versatile magical tool. The egg in whole form can be used as a tool to remove hexes and negative energy. Simply say a prayer or cleansing spell as you run the unbroken egg over the subjects body from head to toe, ensure you cover the palms and underside of the feet. Repeat the spell/prayer until you have finished rubbing the body with the egg. You can rub the body as many times as you feel is right. If you dont have a spell or cannot recite a prayer envision a white light glowing from the egg abosrbing negative energy from the body. Once you have completed this ritual get rid of the egg either by placing it in a paper bag and burying it at a crossroad that you do not frequent or simply flush it down the toilet. If you take the egg out of the house keep it in the paper bag and do not expose to the sun light (family superstition). This cleansing can be incorporated into any massage or energy work.
Eggs can be used for divinination, this is not something I am entirely an expert in however there are plenty of resources available online and in printed text.
Here’s my little bit knowledge in egg divination: To do a reading you can follow the same action as you would for a cleansing however instead of throwing the egg out immediately you break the egg open into an uncontaminated glass of room temp water and allow it to rest for 15 minutes at least before reading. My family only does this to look for the evil eye and to ensure its removal. When the egg resembles an eye then the egg cleansing was a success, if it’s abnormal shaped then another cleansing must be done. If there is no shape that forms then it means that there was no evil eye, still a success as any negativity present has been cleared. Blood spots may indicate negative health problems, however I cannot expand on this as I am limited in my knowledge on this. You can refer to a dream dictionary to interpret images/shapes you see formed in the egg white. Some people also include the egg shell in the reading either by crushing it and adding to the water and reading the shape of the pieces or where the pieces fall or by reading the egg shell as is after breaking the yolk and whites into the water, analyzing the lines of the cracks. Dispose as you would at the end of a cleansing. Do not keep the egg for more than 24 hours as the negative energy can leak back into the atmosphere and again do not expose to the egg to sunlight. Another way to do readings is when you are cooking them, paying attention to the shapes that form in the egg whites or egg yolk as they cook. Depending upon the omen you may take caution on eating them after the reading. You can incorporate tarot, pendulums and etc for further interpretations.
Egg Shell
Eggs can be hollowed out and washed to use for containers spells. Clean the egg by poking holes in the bottom and top of the egg and blowing out the whites and yolk or breaking the bottom of the egg, wash with water and dry. Place items for your spell inside the empty shell and seal up with glue and tissue paper or paper mache paste and deploy spell as needed (burying or place in window/pathways).
Tip to dry egg shells faster: Turn oven to warm, place egg shells on baking sheet and dry for 15 minutes in the oven or until egg shell is dry.
Egg shells can also be powdered and used in spell work or mixed with salt and placed in doorways or windows for protection and cleansing. Magical chalk can be made too using egg shell powder to draw sigils/circles or write spells onto surfaces.
These are not the only useful magical tools and uses chickens have to offer. There are plenty more magical uses of chickens available through valid other resources. I hope to also expand on this subject in later posts.
If you feel so inclined you can honor and thank your chickens for their use by taking a moment to talk to them, cleaning out their water container and giving them fresh clean water. Cleaning their coop, giving them special treats or simply thanking them verbally for their work. A little appreciation helps strengthen the magical work of the tools you use. If you use store bought eggs support an organic farm raised cruelty free brand and simply thank the chicken in spirit.
