One piece 1098
Oda.. What do you mean you've created a girl who escaped slavery then thrown her back to the hell and worse, for TWO years, being kidnapped right before the day that she eagerly looked forward to. This chapter is going to haunt me for days
Regardless of her small screentime, Ginny is not a nobody. She's essentially the mastermind of God Valley incident. She saved lives including Kuma's and never left his side - wishing to be his 'big sis' after Iva left. She had always been there to protect him. But thinking about it, Kuma couldn't reciprocate it the same way did he.
Ginny was Kuma's opposite - he'd hesitate, she'd jump into action. She knew she loved kuma and proposed him. She saw him being imprisoned and went to fight the King. She was bringing a balance to Kuma's life, which fell apart after she left. Ginny came to save Kuma time and time again, but in the two years of her kidnap, Kuma gave up on her.
"we raised hell to free you, Kumachi", opposing "I thought I'd never see you again." There's a clear difference between their mindsets.
Kuma became violent yes. But so far we haven't seen any hint that he teleported to Mariejeoise. There's already a record set by Fisher Tiger so it wasn't beyond the realm of possibilities, but Kuma was probably trapped by his trauma and abusive upbringing. He didn't think Ginny would be alive because his mother died.
But Ginny never gave up, she had remained firm with her convictions till the end. She loved a person and the child had genes of her abuser, but she carried the baby and gave birth to her, named her. Ginny was not a person who'd abandons someone.
She realized that sunlight would kill her, but she set sail alone and correctly navigated back to the church. Back to the home they once used to live in before they joined the revolutionaries. The place and its happy memories that probably never left her mind in the two years. The church is the place where she found her solace after her childhood slavery. She wanted her daughter to grow there, she wanted it to be her own grave.
What Ginny gave up on was Kuma's love. She knew he'd worry, she looked hideous and felt that she has no right to face him. "Don't you dare come here" - How prude of her to bloat about wanting to marry him, make him happy, to protect him - and then leave for two years and return with a baby? She knew he'd still love her, but she had no right to expect anything from him, for herself or her child.
"Tell the kind Kumachi, that I've always always loved him."
Kuma had always saved civilians from their miseries. She appreciated Kuma's benevolence.
But it doesn't make Ginny any less kind. For she had something Kuma lacked in his younger days. To fight tooth and nail for the ones that are important, and to never give up.
The art this chapter was so raw and almost messy, which is fantastic because I feel like it really added to the almost hopelessness of everything that has been happening to kuma.
something something how luffy always sees humanity in everyone he meets, no matter how weird or inhuman looking they are vs the celestial dragons objectifying and dehumanizing everyone who isnt them
What fucks me up the most about 1098 is something I don't see many people bringing up
So we have the very fucked circumstances around Bonney's birth, right? Everything that happened to Ginny is beyond fucked and capulates exactly everything that's fucking wrong about the Celestial Dragon "system" and the World Government.
Then you have Kuma, just imagine dealing with this trauma AND having to have heard your wife - who was on death's door as she's on the phone with you and your closet comrades - tell you she's dying of a terminal illness and it's a miracle she even had the chance to talk to you for the last time, you leaving to teleport to where she is in desperation to save her ultimately missing her last I love you and her probably dying ON CALL given how we see the den-den mushi receiver still in her hand after she's already gone, THEN finding Bonney, her daughter, and the million fucking horrific things that must go through your head for her even to be able to exist, then swearing to your dead wife you will raise her as your own. Think about how fucked that is.
But then, turns out Ginny's illness was genetic. And Bonny now has it and can no longer be exposed to sunlight. The kid's make fun of her over it - over something she can't control. Then it turns out she has only five years to live because no normal doctors can find a cure, ultimately and I'm assuming leading to Kuma going to Vegapunk to find a cure and maybe that's how the Government finds him and only lets the treatment happen in exchange for Kuma working for them as Warlord - the last part being only a theory for now.
So you have all of that, right? But you know what's the kicker for me?
All the stuff about Ginny, Bonney only just found that out when she looked in Kuma's bubble. She didn't know beforehand.
I mean why would she? She's actually twelve, a child, only appearing older due to her fruit and probably having to appear older to be a pirate and all the stuff being a pirate entails for her own safety to at least appear to be an adult - which I'm heavily guessing she only did become a pirate in the first place just to find her dad, which is really really fucking sad. But she's a kid, Kuma - also probably dealing with the World Government and Warlord shit at the same time and pre-pacifista - would've never told her at this age. This is a fucking heavy topic, and to learn that not only Kuma isn't her biological dad but she's also... part Celestial Dragon is something that should take a lot out of anyone and with her apparently crying all night after seeing the bubble, now it just makes even more sense. But even still, she loves her dad - not some fucking monster who enslaved her mother, her actual dad who loved and raised her and most likely agreed to being a World Government genie pig in exchange for treatment to save his daughter's life.
Only so few chapters so far and I'm personally already considering it my favorite saddest, depressing, gut wrenching backstories. And general this flackback just adds so much to all the pre-established stuff we already knew about Kuma. It's the type of flashback that puts so many things in place just 🫠 it's fucked up and sad but I absolutely live for these types of flashbacks like I'm crying, disgusted, my heart ripped out but damn Oda. You really didn't pull punches, huh?
saturn is bonney's father /responsible for her illness
Bonney seems to have some specific hatred towards Saturn, and it’s a particularly cruel twist of the knife that the man who turned Kuma into a cyborg is the man who raped Kuma’s one love in life.
It would also explain why Saturn is so insanely soft on Bonney. Telling the marines to spare her because she’s ‘just a girl’. Right after going on a rant about how all humans are worthless insects.
Additionally (not as sure about this) but Whitebeard’s and Roger’s mysterious disease that manifests later in life could be connected to their time at god valley. Saturn was there, maybe he gave them this illness too?
comment ( also its possible he knew about kuma and ginny's connection so he hurt ginny because that would hurt kuma far more then anything he could do to kuma personally
my addition from wiki:
Mie Prefecture The ushi-oni is considered to curse the Mie Prefecture. It is said that there was once an ushi-oni in the caves of Gokasho-ura, Minamiise, and when the lord of the Gokasho castle, Aisu Shigeaki shot it with a bow, the seishitsu (lord's wife) fell sick with an incurable illness due to the curse. Because of this, Shigeaki distanced himself from the seishitsu, and developed an infatuation for a shirabyōshi (dancer) who came from the capital. As a result, the seishitsu's parents, Kitabatake, came to have bad relations with the Aisu, and ended up ruining the Aisu.[1]

One piece chapter 1098 spoilers
WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FYUCK
My brain is spinning okay so,
Bonney is the child of Ginny and whatever celestial she was forced to be with (nasty), and in the current timeline she's 12 years old which is insane
She has the same illness as Ginny which is a super fucked up illness (probably manufactured by the world government, something something sapphire mines etc etc), and she was supposed to die at 10, aka right before the timeskip. But she was alive and in an adult form at Sabaody which tells me that her devil fruit may have been the "cure" she needed.
I'm predicting that King Bekori will burn down the church and Bonney will eat the devil fruit in time, somehow.
AND KUMA DIDNT EVEN GET TO HEAR GINNY'S DYING MESSAGE GIVE THIS MAN A BREAK
And I just reread the chapter after typing all this, is Bonney named Jewelry Bonney after the jewels that grow out of her skin? Aka her INCURABLE DISEASE?
And Kuma having to lie to her that whole time. And we know now that Bonney knows about ALL of this, I'm losing my mind
