you almost don't recognize him.
it's not because he's changed too much.
it's because he hasn't.
he barrels through the marketplace with the same impossible energy, nearly toppling a fruit stand, laughing while someone yells after him. he apologizes halfway through laughing, buys three apples he definitely didn't mean to buy, immediately hands two to strangers, and keeps running.
some things survive time.
you freeze.
your basket hangs forgotten at your side.
"...luffy?"
he skids.
his sandals scrape against the cobblestones.
for a second, he just stares.
then his face lights up so brightly it almost hurts to look at.
"you're alive?!"
before you can answer, he's already sprinting toward you.
he crashes into you hard enough to knock the breath out of your lungs, wrapping both arms around your shoulders with absolutely no regard for balance. your basket falls over, oranges rolling across the street.
"ow," you wheeze.
"you're really here!"
"yes."
"you're not a ghost?"
"...i don't think so."
he pokes your cheek.
"...yep!" he grins. "you're real!"
you laugh before you can stop yourself.
it's the exact same laugh you had when you were ten years old, when he insisted bugs made good emergency snacks.
he pulls back just enough to stare.
"you laugh the same!"
"...you yell the same."
"i do!"
"that wasn't a compliment."
he laughs anyway.
people continue walking around the two of you as if nothing strange is happening.
maybe, on an island that pirates visit, this isn't strange at all.
"...where'd you go?" he asks suddenly.
the question lands softly.
years.
it's been years.
after gray terminal.
after everything.
after everyone scattered across the sea.
you smile a little.
"i could ask you the same thing."
"i became king of the pirates!"
"...already?"
"not yet."
"..."
"...working on it."
you shake your head.
"that sounds more believable."
he beams.
"come meet everyone!"
before you can protest, your wrist is already in his hand.
he drags you through town exactly like he used to drag ace toward trouble and sabo toward plans neither of them approved of.
you'd forgotten how impossible it was to keep up with him.
the straw hats are...loud.
not all of them.
some are surprisingly quiet.
one has green hair and is asleep against a wall despite standing upright.
another immediately asks if you're single.
someone hits him.
hard.
a reindeer talks.
you decide not to question it.
"...this is my friend!" luffy announces proudly, like he's introducing treasure.
"from where?" nami asks.
"when we were kids!"
"...really?"
"yeah!"
he points dramatically.
"she climbed trees!"
"...that's the introduction?" you ask.
"and she punched ace once."
"he deserved it."
"he really did," luffy nods seriously.
sanji had heart eyes.
"someone punched their older brother?"
"someone stole my lunch."
"...fair enough."
zoro snorts.
stories come easily after that.
luffy tells them terribly.
he skips entire years.
he exaggerates details that don't matter.
he forgets details that absolutely do.
"remember when ace fell into the river?"
"you pushed him."
"...did i?"
"yes."
"on purpose?"
"yes."
"...that sounds like me."
it absolutely does.
you end up correcting him more than once.
no, sabo wasn't the one who got stuck in the tree.
that was luffy.
no, ace wasn't scared of giant beetles.
he was scared of that one really angry goose.
"it chased him for like twenty minutes."
"it did not."
"it absolutely did."
"ace screamed."
"he yelled."
"he screamed."
luffy laughs so hard he almost falls out of his chair.
later, after lunch, the others drift away.
shopping.
exploring.
arguing.
being themselves.
it's quieter now.
you and luffy sit on the pier with your feet dangling over the water.
the silence isn't awkward.
it never was.
"...do you ever think about them?" you ask.
his smile softens.
"...every day."
he doesn't ask which one.
he knows.
"ace would've liked this ship," you say quietly.
"yeah."
"he would've eaten everything sanji made."
"he would've stolen everything sanji made."
"...also true."
the waves tap gently against the dock.
"...and sabo?"
luffy smiles again.
"a lot happened."
"...i figured."
"he's alive."
your head snaps toward him.
"...what?"
"i found him again!"
your eyes widen.
"he forgot stuff for a while, but he's okay now."
your throat tightens unexpectedly.
"...he's really alive?"
"yeah!"
there's no hesitation in his answer.
none at all.
you laugh.
then, embarrassingly...
you start crying.
"...hey?"
"sorry."
"did i say something bad?"
"no."
you wipe at your face.
"...that's just..."
you don't finish.
you don't have to.
for years, you'd carried two ghosts.
now one of them wasn't a ghost anymore.
luffy quietly nudges your shoulder.
"...he'd be happy you're crying."
"...that's a weird thing to say."
"he liked it when people cared."
"...yeah."
he did.
that evening, the crew insists you stay for dinner.
sanji cooks enough food for three armies.
luffy eats enough food for two.
everyone else fights for the remaining portions.
it feels...
warm.
like listening to rain from inside a cabin.
you hadn't expected pirates to laugh this much.
brook tells terrible jokes.
usopp tells impossible stories.
franky cries dramatically over cola.
robin watches everyone with the quiet smile of someone who already knows how the evening will end.
comfortable.
messy.
happy.
it's familiar in ways you weren't prepared for.
because years ago...
there had been another table.
not an actual one.
just an old log.
four children.
burnt fish.
stolen bread.
dreams too large for the mountain that held them.
"remember when ace tried cooking?"
luffy bursts into laughter.
"don't."
"he burned water."
"i don't think that's possible."
"he found a way."
"he did."
"he said smoke meant flavor."
"...that's horrifying."
you grin.
"he made us eat it anyway."
luffy nods solemnly.
"i had stomach pain."
"for two days."
"worth it."
"...was it?"
"...yeah."
you both laugh.
night settles over the island.
eventually, you stand.
"...i should go."
luffy frowns immediately.
"already?"
"i have work tomorrow."
"quit."
"...that's terrible advice."
"works for me."
"you are literally a pirate."
"exactly!"
you shake your head.
some things truly never change.
he walks you back through town anyway.
the streets glow with lantern light.
"...hey," he says.
"hm?"
"don't disappear again."
you look at him.
he says it so simply.
not accusing.
not sad.
just hopeful.
you smile.
"...i won't."
he grins.
"good."
"...though i can't promise i'll follow you across the grand line."
"that's okay... i'll accidentally end up here again someday."
that somehow sounds even more likely.
before you leave, he digs through his pocket.
"...here."
it's a tiny shell.
white.
slightly chipped.
completely ordinary.
"...?"
"found it this morning."
"you just found this?"
"yeah."
"...and you're giving it to me?"
"yep."
"...why?"
he shrugs.
"'cause!"
you stare at the shell.
it isn't valuable.
it isn't rare.
it probably isn't even the prettiest shell on the beach.
and somehow...
it feels priceless.
you laugh quietly.
"...i don't have anything to give you."
"sure you do."
"...what?"
"you're alive."
...
you don't know what to say.
so instead...
you reach forward.
and flick his forehead.
"ow!"
"that's for making me cry."
"worth it."
"...yeah."
it probably was.
the thousand sunny leaves the next morning.
you stand on the harbor long after sunrise.
luffy is hanging halfway over the railing despite several people yelling at him not to.
"don't forget!"
"i won't!"
"if you see sabo before me, tell him hi!"
"i will!"
"and tell him i got taller!"
"...he'll notice."
"tell him anyway!"
you laugh.
"okay!"
the ship drifts farther away.
the voices become smaller.
the figures blur into silhouettes against the morning sun.
luffy waves until you can barely see him anymore.
you wave back.
some people leave your life like tides.
quietly.
inevitably.
others return the same way.
not because the years disappeared.
not because nothing changed.
but because somewhere beneath all that time...
the friendship waited.
patient as the sea.
and when the waves finally carried you back to each other...
it remembered your name.
