SET AND COSTUME DESIGN FOR THE OPERA ARIANE AND BLUEBEARD

Set in a fantastical unspecified land based on Azerbaijan. The character of Bluebeard is here based on the antihero in the French symbolist novel A Rebours; an eccentric, reclusive and sadistic aesthete who retreats into an artistic world of his own creation. Ariane is dubbed as a ‘bringer of light’ in the lyrics, and in this imagining has literally come from the sky by arriving by plane, based on Amelia Earhart, the first female pilot.
