1 August 1943. Operation Tidal Wave. USAAF B-24D Liberators from Libya attacked 9 oil refineries at Ploesti, Romania. Flying low to avoid radar detection they dropped time delayed bombs. Of 177 B-24s taking part in the raid 167 managed to attack their targets. 57 B-24s were lost.

Crew of B-24D "Brewery Wagon", 8th Air Force, the 512th Bomb Squadron, 376th Bomb Group, pose for a photo before taking part in Operation Tidal Wave, the bombing of Romania's Ploesti refinery. During the raid the bomber was attacked by a Bf 109 which forced the pilot to crash land in Romania. Operation Tidal Wave

The failed low-level bombing mission aimed at destroying 9 petroleum refineries located around the Romanian city of Ploiești, when on August 1 1943, 162 B-24 Liberators flying from Libya made a series of bombing runs over the area, achieving little in terms of lasting damage, and in return losing 53 aircraft, with a further 55 damaged, turning into one of the biggest disasters of the United States Army Air Forces.

L'Opération Tidal Wave est un bombardement stratégique de grande envergure effectué le 1er août 1943 depuis Benghazi en Libye par l’USAAF contre le complexe pétrolier roumain de Ploiești qui était la principale source de carburant des forces allemandes.

Au premier plan se trouve le B-24D Li'l Jughaid de la Ninth Air Force, 98th Bombardment Group, 415th Bombardment Squadron (pilote Lyle Spencer, copilote Harry J. Baker, bombardier Boyden Supiani). 81 years ago today, B-24s in action over Ploesti as they attempt to knock out nine of Hitler’s refineries that help fuel the German war machine. ✈️
