Ijeoma here. let me add a little more info: in it's proxy war against the USSR, the US not only funded and armed the Mujahideen - they also created text books for Afghan school children and other propaganda to violently radicalize young people against the West. This was all to remove the USSR from a politically strategic area in the Middle East. The Taliban was formed primarily from students, many radicalized by US propaganda, and angry at the abuses of the Mujahideen that the US had funded and armed. As the Taliban took control they used the confiscated weapons that the US had provided to the Mujahideen to gain and keep power. External powers like the US and Pakistan have used the Afghan people for their own political aims at the direct cost of Afghan life and liberty.
