My first attempt at a poem!
I’m not very experienced at writing poetry. But with everything that happened to @taylorswift today, and the discussion of men trying to control women, I wrote one. This isn’t just for women. It is for any group in history that has faced oppression, belittlement, racism, homophobia, anything that made someone feel like less. Anything that made someone feel like their voice was being silenced, or their opportunities denied.
I watch the people passing by
As I sit inside my mind,
Dreaming of a tomorrow
Belonging to a different time.
A time when I could rise above
The status I was born,
And be freed from a society
That for me held only scorn.
Where as I walked down the road
I could walk with a head held high,
And not fear the consequences
Of a mistaken eye to eye.
My voice would more than echo
Off the walls that they have built.
My thoughts would be encouraged
Instead of seized or forced to wilt.
No longer could I be denied a seat
Around the table of opportunity,
And I’ll have a platform to illuminate
The struggles of those who came before
When my worth is more than a dowry
Assigned by Y’s behind closed doors.
And I can prove to them that you and I
Are capable of changing all the world.
The hours pass, the day grows dark
As I sit dreaming inside my mind.
Until twelve chimes sing a call to action,
And in my heart, I know, THIS is our time.
